cant select reverse gear

Hi guys,

Today and yesterday I had just started my car and tried to select reverse gear but even though the stick went into reverse position the gear was not selected. Anyone know what this means in terms of where the problem lies?

DMF? Clutch? Gearbox?

any help would be appreciated.

so far it has only happened twice and the rest of the time its fine. When you say gearbox you mean its on its way out?

When you say it has only happened a couple of times you are making sure the gearstick is fully pulled back i take it. This has happened to me a few times as well and was sorted by re engaging gear.

When was your gearbox oil last changed.

If it has only happened on a few occasions i would say it is nothing to really worry about and can probably be sorted with an oil change for the gearbox. I was under the impression that you could not select reverse full stop.

Yeah so far just twice but I should probably mention the guys at HH recommended I change the DMF last week as it was on its way out and causing vibration.

Its going to HH this week to get a full DMF and clutch kit fitted so the gearbox oil and clutch oil will get done then too right?

If it is the linkage is that a big job?

If this is a 6 speed gearbox then there's an electrically operated lockout mechanism to prevent accidentally shifting from 5th to reverse instead of 5th to 6th. It sounds like this could be playing up.

sadly its only a 5 speed box.

In that case it sounds very much as if the linkage from the box to the gearlever has a problem. No idea on the book time but I'd be surprised if it's more than a couple of hours.
