centre console hdmi and aux points

What can I do with the hdmi and aux points in my centre console? I plugged in the hdmi to my phone and the"unsupported" message appeared. I believe the aux is for playing music from my phone but at my age all I listen to is classic and radio4. I was hoping I could get something on my sat nav screen, ie alternative routing system. Can anyone help a technology dinosaur.?

USB port is for plugging in a USB stick, its a bit flakey. My IPhone used to work but now does not .
if you have a 3.5mm stereo to 3.5mm stereo lead you can plug it into your phone and play directly from that but as far as functionality with the head unit goes its not a runner.

The wired solution from headphone jack to aux actually works quite well, USB is less reliable and bluetooth is useless except for phone calls.

This looks like an option, but a bit pricey for me! For now I use a GROM BT3 and have my phone in a holder on the dash, works great for Google maps etc
