Crankshaft Pully or Chain ?

Hi there,

I have been investigating a ticking/rattle sound coming from the aux belt area. Read loads of threads and have done some checks by removing the AUX belt and running the engine. The noise is still there. So it seems like its the crankshaft pully or the chain itself.

The noise isn't really noticeable over the diesel clatter, but when you listen to it from near the drivers side wheel it is noticeable.

Car is an 07 plate, with 100k. Not got full history but has been looked after by the previous owner (or so he says). The condition of the car suggests that he has.

Whilst I did my checks, I noticed that there is a very slight wobble on the crank pully. its ever so slight and this wobble is noticeable on the belt as it passes the tensioner.

Before I spend money on replacing the crankshaft pully, I wanted some views, has anyone had this issue before ?
 
Had a rattle on mine, was the chain. Common on these cars. Mine was a bad rattle so got both the timing chain and the oil pump chain dine. Cost £800 all in.

Read the thread I posted. Oil chain is the one that goes from what I'm lead to believe.

Guys really helpful on here.
 
ok done some more reading...I'm just trying to understand why the sound of the chain can be heard on idle only. Isn't it the case that the chain is more audible when you bring up the revs to 1k - 2k ?

Was wondering if I should throw in some Wynns engine flush to see if that helps get the tensioners cleaned up, should remove any build up of stuff stopping them from working effectively ?
 
Should be fitting my replacement motor tomorrow, so put new chains in today.



For reference, at 91k ('09 N22A2) the pump chain was half-way towards the wear limit.
This is measured by the extension of the tensioner.
The service limit is 8.0mm and the chain was at 4.1mm.
Virtually no wear on the chain slippers either.


With my bikes, I check wear based upon how much I can pull the chain off the sprockets. So end up replacing far sooner than I would based on length.
Based upon the amount I could pull the chains, I wouldn't be keen on one near its wear limit, especially as I've just had one go on me.
 
OK, so without removing the belt, how can you check the wear limit ?

I hear a subtle rattle around the crank shaft pully which you need to listen for over the normal engine noise. Having spoke to a few back street garages suggest either am paranoid or its chain noise, but its early days...Sounds like I will need to replace the whole lot soon, question is how soon ?!

Is it worth changing everything i.e. both chains, both tensioners, and all guides ? Also debating whether I should get Honda parts, or aftermarket ?
 
It's measured at the tensioner.

Fortunately I have my old motor sat in my garage at the moment, so I've taken a pic.

There's an inspection cover which will allow you to see the timing chain tensioner, but the oil pan has to come off to see the oil pump chain tensioner, and that means suspending the engine to remove the rear mount and the air con compressor mount at the front.

I've only changed the chains in mine, as there was minimal wear on everything, even the chain slippers.

The number of components you change will depend on how much they're worn.
On a high-miler, the general consensus has been to change everything.

I used a Febi-Bilstein timing chain (part no. 30699) but they no longer make the pump chain (31115) so I fitted a Honda chain (13441-RBD-E01)

The 'special tools' for locking the tensioners and oil pump drive are easily substituted for 2.5 and 8mm drill bits, and a 2.5mm Allen key.

Ok thanks for that, mine has done 110k so would you class that as high miles ? sounds like I should replace everything, is there a decent discount on a genuine kit via this forum ?
 
Seems to vary from car to car from what I've read.
I reckon the motor I've just bought would've gone past 150k easily before it became noisy.

Honda extended the warranty on the early ones to 125k, so that's probably a good guide, however if it's making chain noise, it needs to be done irrespective of the mileage.

I think I have been lucky so far from reading this thread.

My engine has just gone over 200K and have just started to get (I think) a noisy chain etc. I have changed the oil and filter every 6K from new so perhaps that has helped!!

Anyway it is time to do the job.

Goodluckmonkey - is it really necessary to use an engine hoist and remove all the bits as per the manual or are their any short cuts I can take.

It seems a hell of a job - I can remember when I replaced the timing chain on my 300E mercedes it was just a case of removing the radiator and crankshaft pulley to get at the bolts on the timing chain cover.

How long did it take to do the job.
