Hi Guys,

While my car was in with the Mech today having the rear caliper sorted, I asked him to check the alternator, as I was having starting problems despite having a new battery just before xmas.

Went to a local battery specialist for the battery.

Anyway turns out that the battery fitted had a cold cranking ampage of 400, way too low!

Cold cranking amperes (CCA) is the amount of current a battery can provide at 0 °F (−18 °C). The rating is defined as the current a lead-acid battery at that temperature can deliver for 30 seconds and maintain at least 1.2 volts per cell (7.2 volts for a 12-volt battery). It is a more demanding test than those at higher temperatures

My mech reckons min 600 needed, the parts dept at my local dealership didn't initially know what I was talking about but eventually called back to say I need 700.

Does anyone know the correct spec for a 2004 cdti?

Lesson on this one - not all batteries are equal, and replacing a battery too low a CCA will mean that starting problems persist!

Cheers Simon

400 is about right for a 2.0 petrol, however it might be a tad weak for a diesel 500 or 600 surely would be enough.

My bosch silver has CCA 640 which is fine for my diesel, the new bosch S5 has CCA 740 but also costs as well.

Really pays to do some research on batteries as their are a few variants.

Please search the forum this topic has numerous variants..

Thanks Guys,

Bosch S5 on order will let you know if it makes any difference :D

Hi Guys,

Bosch S5 fitted today and what a difference, engine spins over with no issues and sparks up straight away.

Also noticed that the glowplug preheat light goes out almost immediately!

Weather not too cold down here at the moment so I don't think it will be tested too hard for the moment, but this new unit has definately made an appreciable difference.

Regards

Simon
