I posted a few days ago about the modifications I have done to my CW3 Type S Tourer and one of them was a DIY Double Din Headunit. Below I have put together a parts list and links to everything you would need to replicate it for yourself. The end goal for my version of this will be to Remove the faceplate for the CD Changer on my car and put this Unit in its place. If you have any questions feel free to ask. I've tried to be as detailed as I can but I may have missed out a few things.

Here are a few videos of it running:

Parts:

Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 8GB Ram

128GB Sandisk SDCard

Evicic 7inch Touch Screen Display

3.5mm Microphone

4 Port USB 3.0 Hub

CarLinkIt CPC200-Autokit (Only one compatible with Open Auto Pro)

KiWiBiRD USB to 3.5mm Audio adapter

USB-C Cable with On/Off Switch – from ThePiHut

XL Heatsink

Software:

I am using two OS’s on this project, OpenAuto Pro which is a paid OS from BlueWave Studios and LineageOS 19 for raspberry pi by Konstakang.

On OpenAuto Pro you will need to pay for the Apple Carplay addon. Installation for both OS’s is very straight forward and can be done by anyone.

Setup:

Now for the setup, it will be different for every car and every use case. This is how I did mine. Firstly, I setup the ***embling the screen and the raspberry pi. I opted to mount the Pi on the back of the screen as I wanted the least amount of cables coming out of the screen and the Pi. Once I had that ***embled, I installed the OS and set them both up so I can switch between the two. At this point I’m sure you are wondering what the USB hub is for, well I used the hub so I can have the USB Audio adapter and the Carplay dongle in a remote location. I then took everything in my car to look for a place to mount everything up. I ordered extra dash pieces so I can modify them without ruining my cars original pieces. This part is up to you now, You can get facias for the car and mount it in the stock locations or you could go nuts and mount it where ever you like.

I know this isn’t in the most amount of detail but this is my first project. I came across a video made by Novaspirit Tech and I will link all the webpages I used. Everything I bought can be found on amazon so I will not be linking that but I have put the exact name of the products used.

My plans for the future is to wire it up to the internal radio harness of the car using CarPiHat (Car Interface HAT for Raspberry Pi) but for now it is plugged into the AUX of my car. You can also get everything to work with the steering wheel controls of the car but I am yet to find out how to do it.

Thank you for reading and I hope I was of help.

I'm guessing you know that on the models without the premium setup the cd changer is replaced with a cubby hole setup. I've not so long thrown one away that I had butchered up and fitted a spare upper display into which I had planned to use when I was fitting a tablet in front of the upper display (before buying an aftermarket unit). There is plenty of space inside to hide any additional wiring etc.

Looking forward to seeing the finished article.

Nice write up, thank you. At some point I’ll get round to updating the infotainment system. Probably after I’ve got my other mods sorted. I didn’t need another reason to spend money on my car but now you’ve given me one, cheers! :p

No worries, I’ve been wanting to do this since I got the car, I have to say I’ve been using it since June and it’s not disappointed me yet. I have been lazy and not fully put it into the dash yet but with work and family life I’ve not had much time to do it yet. Once I’ve done that there will be another post on it.

Yea I know about that but the beauty of this project is that you get to pick the location for the device itself. I was gunna put it in place of the original screen but it’s a bit of a stretch trying to reach that for me

Yeah that's what put me off the smaller android units that fit the same as the displays. The best thing about using the raspberry pi is you can use a slimline screen and fit in that location.

Yea, my entire unit is no more than an inch and half thick.
