Hi Guys,

Had my car re gassed about six months ago and my air con was working great! anyway when we had the hot spell not long back got in my car after work and with the air con on I had no cold air

Took the car back to ATS who had re gassed it and they had a quick look and told me the clutch wasnt engaging when I was pressing the air con button, that was that as far as they were concerned they told me to take it to a specialist!

Firstly, are there any simple steps that I can check myself first (im no mechanic but not shy at looking at things if pointed in the right direction) to see if its something simple, ive read about fuses and relays but not sure where to look?

Secondly if not, does anyone no a good / reasonable mobile specialist that covers the Nottingham area.

Thanks as always, Rob.

Sounds like the compressor is seized.

If it is you have three options.

1, Take it to Honda who will charge about £1000 to change the compressor and change all the pipework because the debris from the seized compressor works its way round the system.

2, Go to a aircon specialist who will charge between £500 and £700 to fit a reconditioned or pattern part compressor and either clean the pipe work or replace it depending on how much ***** is in there.

3, Do what i did and buy a second hand compressor and have a good mechanic fit it and flush the pipework then get it re-gassed. This cost me £200 all in

£50 for the compressor from Ebay, £100 to fit it and flush the pipework and £50 to re-gas the system. (this had to be done twice to get enough oil round round the system to get the donor compressor to turn).

Of course it may be something completely different but 9 times out of 10 its a siezed compressor.

Hi Neil

Thanks for the reply,.......ouch! Did not want to hear that :(

No fuses or relays to check then?

I nearly bought your wheels off eBay a couple of months Bach btw, I think (your epsilons) although love the ones I've gone for now.

That's really bad news on the air con though, could do without that.

There is a relay that engages the clutch that may have gone. But its a maybe.

If you stick your hand right down the bottom of where the drive belt is on your engine you can actually see the aircon compressor. With the aircon off you can move it quite easily with your hand. If it is stiff or does not move at all the compressor is seized.
If it moves freely then you know its not going to be expensive.

Here are a couple of pictures to help you identify it.

Thanks Neil

Probably won't be able to check until the weekend now but thanks for the advice and images.

I'll try that first if it's free I'll try to identify the relay.

Pressure switch or wiring to it could be at fault as well. Didnt someone add a feed to the wire on the compressor to see if it kicked the clutch in? I'm sure there is a discussion about it somewhere on here.

Ok

Managed to get out there for ten minutes, and good news, I was deffinately able to turn the side of the compressor in both directions, does that mean its ok then?

Excellent news

I guess next stage is tracking don't the relevant relay and fuse, and David I think your right I'm sure I've read something before regarding the pressure switch, will have another look.

When you took it back to get it checked did they check to see if it had enough pressure in or did they simply get you to press the button and then listen for the compressor kicking in? If they didn't check it for pressure then you need someone to stick it on a machine and check to make sure its got enough refrigerant in and if it hasn't then it needs leak testing, if it has got enough pressure then it's going to be a dodgy wire.

Hi David,

No they didn't, they did exactly as you said, stuck their head under the bonnet and said your compressor isn't kicking in!

I'll get it pressure tested then, hope it's not a leak as that could be expensive too!

Relay m8 engages the clutch (10sec on, 10 sec off). I would imagine thats the problem, if you look in the fuse box in the engine bay you will see two large relays, one is for the clutch and the other is for fan on the radiator. You can swap these other and see if the clutch engages.

Over the years on Accord forums I have seen a few of these fail. If your compressor has seized you could be talking big money, check out black death TSX. But I iamge its the relay!!

If you have some electrical knowledge you should be able to short the relay and engage the clutch.

I have had a relay fail and this is what I did. However, I have the electrical circuit diagrams for the accord and a degree in electronics!

Hi David

Thanks for the advice, yes I am an engineer so have some electrical knowledge, i will try swapping the relays over and see if that makes a difference. Will report back the outcome here

Hi all,

Am still trying to fix my air con problem (especially as it is starting to warm up!) and am further on thank to David sending me some circuit diagrams and fault guide. Have tested the relays are ok and have put a jumper across the relay terminals and can here the clutch engage? But I was wondering if someone could tell me where the ECM/PCM connector E (31P) is please???

Thanks.

Hi David & Rob, you you fix your A/C or not?. Mines not kicking in and I'm confused as I can see FIVE relays relating to fans/icicle symbols spread across two fuseboxes.

Would David's wiring diagrams explain whats what?
