Drive Shaft Replacement Problem

Hi Guys

I decided to replace the driveshafts on my I-CTDi as they were starting to cause a vibration. Done 150k so can't complain I suppose.

On the left hand shaft (passenger side) I can't seem to get the new shaft all the way back in. It just engages the splines and that is it. It is because of the circlip. I tried putting the old shaft back in and same problem, but if I take the circlip off then no problems, it goes straight in.

Have pushed as hard as I dare.

The workshop manual on disc I have just says "install the new shaft" nothing about any problems you might encounter.

Is there any nack to putting these in or what. Am I missing something

Any help would be appreciated.

I seem to be having a problem with the circlip. When I put the old one back in, exactly the same problem. If I put it in witout the circlip it goes in perfectly.

It says nothing about any problem you may encounter in the manual I have on disc.

I have tried using as much force as I dare.

Am I missing something? Is there a knack to doing this or what?

Any help would be appreciated. I am desperate, need to get it done.

Might be worth a watch not sure if it covers your problem but he usually explains problems you may come up against.
 
Chesjak,

It needs a quick jolt to put it in. Get a bit of a run-up with it, just loading it up with more force won't normally do it.

Or line the driveshaft up, and give it a thump with a copper mallet.

Also get the open end of the circlip pointed at the floor, if gravity decides to misalign the clip for you, you stand a better chance of springing the open ends in, than the closed end.

Thanks for your replies.

I tried for a long time to get this driveshaft in and it would not go so I left it for a while and went and had a cup of coffee and posted this thread.

Went back and tried again and this time it went in without any problems at all.

All I can ***ume is that the Gremlins also took time off!!!!!!

Great news! It goes like that some days.

I've done the same thing plenty of times in the past. If something's not going my way, I do a different job then come back to it, or take a break.

Better than getting frustrated and breaking something.
