i know its a cheap nasty way to lower your car and sacrifice comfort but i was wandering if anybody has any experience with these with regards to fitting mainly and if they go straight on.

thanks

Depends what kit it is bud, a good kit BC racing coilovers ...or teins ...

Don't use these bud, they are plain awful.

Paul

Do you mean the coilover spring kit for about £50? I looked at them but they come without instructions and they can lower your car between 0-4"! Lowering 4" on stock dampers concerns me.

In answer I can see how they go together, with the locking nut and sleeve sitting at the bottom of the spring but how good they are I don't know

Lowering on stock dampers is not an ideal solution. Especially when talking more than say 60mm. It will give a good look, but will knacker your shocks within a week.

Just curious but how will it knacker the shocks? Obviously if it's dropped right down they'd just stay compressed all the time but if they were set at say a 2" drop then there would still be movement. I gotta admit they be a doddle to fit. Surely it'd be the same as using lowering springs??

I wouldn't lower a car 60mm on springs either though  By running shorter springs the dampers are constantly compressed causing premature wear. The dampers are designed to work at the parameters they are sent of out the factory with. Any deviation from this can cause them to fail.

Even lowering 30mm on springs (which i've done) is not ideal. I only fitted them as they were cheap and i couldn't decide which coilovers to buy

I think it's more about how much you're going to lower the car by. 2" is 50mm, which is a lot in the world of suspension. Also not too sure what the ride would be like.

*edit* i'm not saying don't do it though. Just an opinion.

Im dropped by 60mm and I'd only do that with coilovers, with springs on stock shocks +60mm drop =fail, may not be straight away but it will happen, IV been in which was dropped on springs with stock shocks,, only 40mm drop, hit speed hump a bit hard, bang went the shock, its not a good idea ...

It's cause when the spring is already half compressed the bump you hit will cuase you to bottom out the travel on a regularish basis, and will pop the damper.

I actually meant what would it actually do, pop seals, bend the rod that sort of thing?

Ah I see!!
Yeah bud, people do,do it! But its not very clever or permanent solution, save up and get propar coilies if you want to go static low, or bags /hydrolics if you want to be fake drop  (only messing people with bags /hydrolics):)

It's usually the seals that go first, as there is constant pressure on the dampers. Sucks doesn't it

I should just clear this up, its not the drop that kills standard dampers its the spring rate.

With "ebay coilovers" the rates are quite high, to accommodate the big drops they offer.

This speeds up the the time the damper goes through the travel, and its the increase in damper oil velocity change that knackers the seals and valving.

Lowering springs are soft rates, and so unless you have tired standard dampers they should cope with the springs just fine.

But with the coilover spring rates, standard damper cant cope.

Thanks Marcus!!!! Spot on.

P.S Where the heck have you been????

A couple of years ago I bought a set of the cheap coil overs from Ebay for my lude and when I received them and picked one up i instantly decided that there was no way they were going on the car, and to be honest back then I would of stuck most things on there.. The sleeve was so light it felt like you could easily bend it with your hands..

I guess my car is staying at stock ride height cuz there no way I'm spending £1000 plus on coilovers for car worth £700.

Adam get a set of Eibach springs mate. £200 and well worth it. They only give a drop between 20-30mm but are worth it.

Not too sure tbh mate. Try Koni or Spax. They may be able to help. But with the Eibachs, as there is only a drop of 20-30mm there shouldn't be an issue with the shocks.

Well, as long as they aren't in a bad way before the springs are added.
