hi, my EML has been on more or less for the last week when i got the car, some times it tops out at 4500rpm some time it will go right to the red line ( not that i drive like that all the time just seeing if its restricted )
is there any way of getting the code's with out paying the £40ish to have it pluged in to a computer ?
like the paperclip test you can do on a vectra ?

car is a 2001 accord vtec se

do you have the AA membership, Call them out they will wipe it for you, if not.............there might be a way, have you disconnected the battery for 5 mins?
 
i dont have AA. the battery has been disconected and light still comes on, i was thinking it could be the crank sensor as the car goes in to "limp mode" but dont want to go wasting money on parts i dont need,
so be for i start getting parts thort i would ask the experts 1st lol, also need a mot next month and think if the EML is on its now a fail ??
 
Drive the thing to a friendly local mechanic and get the car looked at. You will not get charged to get the codes read.

Without the fault code toy are just guessing and that can become very expensive. It could be any 1 if 100 things. Chances are its just a sensor at fault but like i said, **** knows which one without the code.
 
There's two blue plastic plus under the passenger dash, just clipped under but connected to nothing.

One is for something to do with srs, the other you use to flash error codes on the dash. I know there is a thread on how to do it on here somewhere.

Just a quick heads up, but check the oil! When the rev limiter drops down like that the car is in limp mode which is designed to protect the engine. I'm not sure of all the faults that can trigger limp mode but I know from personal experience that lack of oil pressure is one - I ignored mine and ended up knackering the engine :( the oil light didn't even come on until after I'd destroyed my engine!! It may not be this on your car, but I think lack of oil is a common trigger for limp mode so I'd really recommend checking!
 
Yup, as Jash has said, check the oil level straight away. Also, if you want to find out the code just do the paperclip test on it.

There's a guide on here somewhere.

you need to work out if your car is fitted with

OBD2A blue 2pin plug and a 3pin plug under the glove box

or

OBD2B 16pin connector in passenger center consol behind the carpet.

if A you will need check the local garage has that style as its rare and only used on jag cars.

if B then most garages with a good code reader will work. codes and means are pined at top of 6th gen area.

PS low oil wont bring on the EML
 
Been thinking about this for a couple of days, here's what i've come up with.

If the car sometimes goes into limp mode and won't Vtec then it could be the Vtec Solenoid. I said to check the oil as Vtec relies on oil pressure to activate. Or an O2 sensor could be to blame. If your car is fitted with two, and it turns out that one is at fault, then always replace as a pair, (and it never hurts to check the oil level B) )

If you've disconnected the battery for longer than 20 mins then you have basically done an ECU reset, then when the light comes on this tells you that it's a recuring fault with the car.

If you do the paperclip test, i've posted an EML light/Fault code help on here, so that will be able to tell you the meaning of the code you get.

Any update on this yet though?
