excessive vibration and smoke in engine bay on start up

Due to the brilliant reliability this is my first post since sept 2012.

I've been frequenting an Mx5 and Mini forum very regularly as they are PITA

BUT now at 103K !!


At idle there's a weird vibration, which sort of comes and goes.

Plus the exhaust manifold must be leaking when cold (does not do it when warm)

Can anyone suggest whether they are linked. Is the timing chain / tensioner or dmf to blame do we think ?

Smoke in the engine bay is either leaking manifold or leaking injector seals, or both. Whip off the engine cover and look for wet residue around the injectors.

Definitely from manifold area NOT injectors.
