I am pretty sure this is the same for the 1.8, the 2.0 and the 2.3 F series engines out of the 6th gens Si has covered the H22 beasty!

this job is not too difficult but if you are a novice it's best left to the experts, I do have some knowledge of Engines so I felt confident enough to have a go myself, leave yourself 2 1/2 hours to complete maximum.

you will need:
socket set
22mm open ended spanner
snips
pliers
flat headed screwdriver (one large and one small)
8mm drill bit
Good strong hoover with a crevis tool
couple of bungee straps to keep wiring out of the way
tin of carb cleaner

Injector seals
EGR valve gasket (I used my old one)

undo the cable on top of the EGR valve, its a squeeze and pull one.
remove the two vac pipes ontop of the rocker cover the larger one marked with the red arrow just pulls out.
the other one has a clasp, just squeeze the clasp with the pliers, tuck them somewhere out of the way for now.
Remove the EGR valve, 13mm nut at each side, Quite hard to get to but it is possible with magnetic sockets.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x408/Genaccord/DSC07797.jpg

put the valve somewhere till later

now to get the wiring to the injectors out of the way

there are 3 brackets holding the wiring case in place, the plugs that go to the throttle body and the main fuel inlet to the engine
these all have 10mm bolts holding them in place, take them all off and remember (take a photo) where they go. as you look at the engine I started with the one on the left

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x408/Genaccord/DSC07782-1.jpg

now the middle one just holds a clip, one 10mm bolt at each side.

the one on the right holds another vac pipe on a bracket.

The Banjo bolt attached to the rail can be left but it does get in the way a bit, think it's best to remove as you do NOT want to damage the fuel lines, be very careful not to loose the washers!!

next up is to unplug the injectors and the last plugs to the throttle body

now the whole loom should lift up so you can attach your bungee/cable tie it out of the way ontop of the rocker cover.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x408/Genaccord/DSC07781-1.jpg

now the fuel rail, you have to be very careful doing this, I believe the injectors get very brittle and are easily damaged.
right hand side one is pretty easy to get to

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x408/Genaccord/DSC07809-1.jpg

the left hand one

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x408/Genaccord/DSC07800-1.jpg

the arrow shows a vac pipe attached to a rigid pipe which when split will just lay down to the right.

now you can carefully wiggle the fuel rail free, the injectors should stay put in the manifold be careful, don't force them!

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x408/Genaccord/DSC07784.jpg

now the fuel rail is free just wiggle the injectors out with your hands NOT any pliers/screwdrivers!

now you will be able to get to the EGR passages easily, there are 5 10mm bolts holding it in place alng with the gasket

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x408/Genaccord/DSC07783-1.jpg

undo these keep the bolts separate to the others as they are longer.
remove the complete thing at once ready for cleaning.

once removed you will see the holes from the inlet manifold which will need cleaning, I used an 8mm drill bit to pull the carbon out while hoovering all the cack away as not to drop into the manifold (the bits would burn off eventually anyway will just create a bit of smoke probably)

now to the EGR valve and the passage chambers. mine were really bad, probably never been done in it's life (123500 miles)

half cleaned

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x408/Genaccord/DSC07788-1.jpg

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x408/Genaccord/DSC07779-1.jpg

all scraped out now just finish off using carb cleaner.
dont forget to clean the EGR ports on the end of the manifold again hoover all the cack away.

Now just put it all back together in reverse order, the Injector seals just slide on

if you need any advice just pm me I'll try my best to help you out.

the car ran much better after this, the only other thing is to get ther EML reset, you can buy OBD2 scanners for £15 off fleabay

Leon.

Awesome tutorial Leon!
Thanks, I may have a try next weekend, but it does seem a tad complicated

Thanks for putting that up dude!

I've been telling Yad that he needs to do this for ages!!! pmsl

No excuses now Yadash mate ;)

Nice writeup Leon. Keep them coming pal. You'll soon be our resident 6th gen expert.

Great write up mate, keep trying to pluck up the courage for this one but as soon as i faced with an open bonnet i cower away and close it back up.

Would love to print this out but the pics are coming up as links instead of actual pics on my screen :(

search "genaccord" on photobucket and you'll find my page :)

there is an american dude on youtube who does it but he cheats, the wiring to the fuel rail is attached at both ends, he just lifts it up and moves it out the way?

beautiful job!
i'm worried just for point: carbon deposit that can fall into air intake manifold.
can they damage catalytic converter? are hard enough to damage cylinder or valve seats?
maybe is better to use a little screw driver with a vacuum to remove deposits without let them falling

I used a drillbit by hand and hoovered the carbon out as not to let any fall into the manifold, I am fairly sure they would get burned up on the next run anyway :)

.. sorry for my poor english, i'm from italy! i missed the meaning of "hoovering" in your procedure, we meant the same thing :)

I've just done this (not the valve as the nuts wouldn't budge but will do it in time) but just clearing out the plate alone has made a world of difference! All the passages in mine were full to the brim with carbon deposits, could stand a screwdriver up in it. Thanks for this mate.

So turns out that one of the bolts holding the valve down got deformed when my mechanic tried to get it off  so I'm going to have to find a new way of getting the fvalve off

either this or cut it off and rethread it?

rethreading is a pain in the rear!

Hi guys! i really need help! I had the P0401 code and like i should do, i cleaned my EGR chamber, ports AND egr Valve and gasket. pretty much all I should do.
However I did not use a shop vac of any sort i jus sprayed carb cleaner through the ports to loosen up the carbon buildup. The amount of carbon buildup was RIDICULOUS almost full to the top in the chamber.
Anyway I made sure the ports and everyhting were clear and clean(with a allen key and carb cleaner), however IM SURE some/most of the carbon has fallen into the intake manifold.
So i take it for a little spin - 1st gear is as powerful as it can be plus im getting ALOT of torque steer and power when i hit vtec. i noticed it hits in earlier which is perfect :)

BUT - 2nd gear rolling to full throttle i notice that the rev bar kinda SLOWS down significantly and hesitates at around 4000rpm to 5500rpm. When it hits vtec however everything is normal and all power.

I am thinking is this a result of carbon buildup falling into the intake?

NOTE: I DID NOT take it for a spin on the motorway(as scotty kilmer suggested on youtube - but im not sure if that would sort the problem). Would that help?

Guys thanks for reading. :) I will post up a video if anyone would like a visual of whats happening.

I believe this error could appear because of vacuum leak or malfuntioning egr valve. Have you tried to change valve? or at least check if egr valve diaphragm is not broken?

Im sure the egr valve is okay since there wasnt any problems with it before?? How can i go about in checking for vacuun leaks? If it is it may be a very small leak or somwthing but there shouldnt be. How would i know if i have a vacuum leak? Thanks :)

this is what ive come across it might make sense it might not.

Testing Video

BEFORE i cleaned the egr valve, ports and chamber, i was able to rev powerfully across the low and mid ranges.

Now after I cleaned the ports, (note: alot of the carbon buildup has probably fallen into the manifold, but not sure if that would matter) I seem to be reving much more smoothly but when im at WOT on gear 2 at 2000rpm, the car begins to kinda have a slow down feeling at
4000rpm and upward until VTEC of course.

I hear the engine revving louder as it goes through these revs but im not actaully going as fast BEFORE fixed my CEL for the egr insufficient flow.

This is what i think - because there was SO MUCH carbon buildup in the ports before, I was using more air mixture (possibly fully) and it was performing much better than now. It feels like its running in economical mode, limp mode, or some sort.

I checked for vacuum leaks and there are none. Plus my egr valve is fine because i have no more CEL.

Problem is, if I got a blanking plate for my egr valve, CEL will come on. Ive already gone into the research of how to get this damn CEL of my ECU but it only seems like i can be able to do that in a remap. So i may as well remap when I decide I want my power I once had !!

What could it possibly be? The fact that i cleaned what needed to be done so I've got the car back in its original state how it should've been?
Or did I do something dodgy like fill the manifold with s****load of carbon or something? doesnt seem like the issue tho.

If anything i think i gained more low power range however, its just when i reach higher revs past 4k rpm :) :( :S ITS STILL A BEAST! LOL

Thanks for reading guys! hope you can share some thoughts on this.
