As ***le, about 1 in 10 times my clutch biting point will change from being 3/4 up the pedal to just off the floor, its a little un nerving when it does it

Anyone have any idea why its doing this? They'es no slip or gear crunching

Im having my clutch and gearbox oil changed later on in the week aswell

I'd take a guess at worn seals in the master/slave cylinder or maybe air in the system? If your fluid is very dark it might be worn seals. If you are going to flush and bleed out the fluid with new stuff hopefully that will resolve it.

Thanks mate, yes the fluid is quite dark in the reservoir

I might get the garage to change the master cylinder aswell just to be sure

So would it be better changing the slave cylinder at the same time as renewing the clutch fluid, is that easier and cheap than a master cylinder?

Slave is a bit cheaper, here is a guide to the OEM pricing for my f18b2 - search for you more specific model from that site

Aye, if replacing master or slave you are going to need to bleed the system anyway so no point doing fluid then cylinder - not that its gonna break the bank, probably one maybe two bottles will flush/bleed the clutch lines.

Thanks mate, I rang my local motor factors and they quoted £69 for slave and £90 for a master cylinder

I will order a slave cylinder and have that replaced with the fluid

What fluid do you use? Is it just dot4 brake fluid?

Also what's the capacity of the system so I know how much to get?

Also I'm looking at gearbox oil, is mtf 3 the best stuff to get?

Thanks in advance

It might be worn seals in either the master or slave cylinder, but I'd definitely try bleeding it first. Also check that neither of the cylinders is loose. Just buy a litre bottle of brake fluid so you'll have some left over for the future.

There almost certainly are better gear oils than Honda MTF-3 (e.g. fully synthetic 75w-90 alternatives?), but I've no idea what they might be. MTF-3 is good enough and won't cause a problem.

Erm...yeah I think it DOT4 that Holdcroft sent me, same as brake fluid yes.

Capacities (1.9litre), oil recommendations and Torques here

thanks for all the advice chaps

So I need to check if either cylinder are physically loose? Would it be worth changing the clutch fluid first and bleed the system before I start looking at replacing slave/master cylinders?

You might not feel anything loose but could possibly see some hydraulic fluid leakage on either cylinder. Check inside above the clutch pedal where it attaches to the master cylinder too.

You could try a bleed and see if it works, might only cost you a fiver/tenner for the quantity of fluid instead of buying parts you might not need.

Thanks Andy that's superb, watching the video it doesent look to hard a job, and if it we weren't in the depths of winter I probably would have tackled it myself, however a wife that wants to go Christmas shopping every 5 minutes and awful weather I feel it's a garage job

When I booked the cat in for Friday the mechanic said the clutch and brake fluid is all 1 system, is that correct?

Nope, its the same fluid (DOT 4 - found a bottle in my boot) that is used but not supplied from the same reservoir if thats what he means. You could remove either hydraulic system and it wouldn't affect the other (on mine anyway).

I think my uncles Passat uses the same reservoir for both, but don't quote me on that ;)

The clutch reservoir is the smaller and on the left of the brake reservoir which has wires running into the bigger grey cap.

I've tried to highlight an estimate run of the clutch lines, you won't see them connected in anyway to the brake hydraulics. I think it runs reservoir, hose, master cylinder, pipe, hose, pipe, slave cylinder at the bottom.

Thanks for that pic Andy, I was looking at the brake fluid reservior then

Ive just checked the clutch fluid and the level is in the middle of min and max and is a light brown colour

I'm really hoping fresh fluid sorts the issue as ive noticed the pedal travel feels a little rough aswell :(

Well ive had the gearbox oil and clutch fluid changed, now goes into gear alot smoother and alot less notchy, however it hasint cured the fluctuating biting point and rough feeling on the pedal

Might just bite the bullet and change both clutch cylinders, as they both look to be the original parts
