ive had issues with my fog lights over the last year or so on my 2004 ctdi. i hardly use them so its never been an issue and as they arent needed to pass the MOT ive left the fault alone. it started with 1 light not working, a new bulb i thought... i went to change this but couldnt get the screw out that holds the plastic surround on so it was left. then it seemed both lights didnt work so i put it down to the other bulb blowing. one day on the way to work they came on without me touching the switch!!!!!!! i noticed them in the bumper of a car in front at some traffic lights. tried to turn them off but they wouldnt! i turned the car off and the lights went out. on my return to the car 10 mins later they had turned on while the car was off and locked. i parked the car up 20 minutes later and they turned off, later i got a call saying that i left my lights on but couldnt get back to the car for about 8 hours as i was at work and returned to a flat battery. jump started the car and pulled the fuse out and its been fine since but i obviously have no power to the fog lights.

ive looked at the history of the car and found a receipt for a fog light relay that had been replaced about 4 years ago so im now thinking it could be this again. ive looked in the manual and under the bonet but cant find it anywhere can anyone tell me where its hiding please?

is this a common issue? surely it should last longer than 4 years.

dude the relay is on the side of the drivers headlamp under the bumper. Its bolted to the headlamp bolt. It will be a bumper off job unless you have small hands lol

hmmm well hidden then, typical rubbish design again by Honda!!!!

i had my bumper off and lights outlast year to install HID's and dont remember seeing anything attached to the lights....

shou;d be to the right of the drivers headlamp. Sounds like it might be hanging there

is that to the right as we woiuld look at it from the front? near to the grill? is it visible without removal of anything?

Its on the drivers side of car near the arch. Well at least mine is

i took the bumper off today to find the relay loose within the bumper. it seems when Honda replaced it 4 years ago they couldnt be bothered to bolt it back in position!!! after taking it apart i found it to be full of water which was obviously the issue here. also the male part of the connection was very badly corroded and a mess so a mate of mine has fitted a spare relay he had in his garage and all is working again as it should.

i have no idea what it was from mate. all i know is that it was a 4 pin 30 amp relay (same as the original) that he had knocking about in his garage. the wiring was a bit confusing to start off with but he got his head round it eventually... it has a permanent live feed and a couple of wires had to be joined together (not sure which ones though...) as the original had a looping wire to connect the terminals. this permanent feed is what was causing my fog lights to come on whenever they wanted before i pulled the fuse along with the water that was trapped inside the old relay causing it to corrode and stick on....

all the new connections were soldered, heat shrinked and then taped up for good measure. the part of the relay where the wires enter it was smothered in vasaline to try and prevent any water getting in then the unit was tucked away under the headlight and held in using a cable tie.

my mate who sorted it use to be a Honda technician and said any relay thats 30 amp and 4 pinned will be fine. his efforts today saved me £55 for the new relay from Honda and no doubt a new loom as well to get the new connection sorted that had also badly corroded which im sure wouldnt be cheap either.

Well I tried it and got a relay from maplins but still not working. The problem I have is the feed from the switch only sends 3.4v and not the 12v I would expect. Anyone got any ideas?

Hello Dave

At honda dealer its nearly £50 last time I checked. Ideally I need to compare the voltage from another car and see if another problem persists. See for me if I had 12v coming from the switch i think my relay would work. Obviously I can't test that theory unless I compare it with a car that works?

I have changed mine with a working relay and still I have the problem. If I bridge the wires on the connector the lamps turn on.
If your good with a multimeter maybe you could test the output of your wiring for me? :)
