My car is a 2.4L Type-S (2003).

The MPG has noticeably went downhill over the past couple of months and power delivery not 100%. I had the check engine light show up and got this code. Seems like there's too much air in the fuel mix.

Took it to a local independent garage and despite it being there for a week they could not diagnose the issue.

The exhaust has a crack in the silencer and I thought it may be due to this but the technician at the garage thought otherwise.

Any ideas on next steps, please?

Most likely a bad lambda sensor or a bad exhaust leak. Also check for any leaks on the intake side.

Thanks. Is it worth just having a garage replace the lambda sensor then, or is there a way to test it?

I would say it needs more checks first, check for leaks in the intake, exhaust etc. Clean the air flow sensor and also replace air filter. Worth also changing plugs if not done in a while and also add some fuel treatment. If none of this works then I would do the front lambda first

If you know there is a 'crack in the silencer' what is stopping you from patching it up, even temporarily ?

I had it welded last year by a garage, but the sound has come back. I live in a flat without a garage so I don't have the facilities myself. I intend to put it back into an exhaust specialist soon.
