Hi all,

After an extremely frustrating few hours trying in vain to replace a blown lamp, I have managed to unsecure the lamp retaining clip (low beam). Thankfully I have retrieved this from the housing and it is undamaged however I now need to remove the whole bumper and headlamp to try and resecure / replace headlamp unit.

My question, is the retaining clip held in by a screw into metal like the 7th Gen models or have Honda changed this for plastic? I cannot see inside by either using a mirror or my phone camera as its too restricted. Any pictures would be welcome.

I do not want to take off the bumper and headlight unit just to find out that I have to buy another headlamp unit and my car is either in bits for days or I'll have to put it all back together again just to redo once I get a new unit.

Why does Honda think it is a good idea to make it virtually impossible to change blown lamps..without taking off the bumper!!

Oh, if anyone knows where to buy the plastic retaining clips at a good price please let me know, Honda want £2.16+VAT each!!! Ouch!

Many thanks

almost reminds me of my plastic pig (reliant robin); that was a pig to work in for sure!

The dip beam lamp retaining clip isn't held in by a screw on the 7th gen, the clip is simply moved inward, upward to disengage it from the bracket, then let go... the lamp then pulls out.

But it's still a bit of a pig to do until you get enough practice!

Just take the bumper off, it's the only way.
8th gen bumpers come off easily, just that low beam bulb is an absolute pig.

Hi Jon, thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately the metal retaining clip that holds the H1 lamp in position has completely fell off, it's now residing in my cup holder. Your instructions are correct for securing the lamp if the metal clip is still in position however mine has come off.

I remember when this happened to me before in my 7th Gen model and all I needed to do was take out the retaining screw, put the clip back in place, put a little loctite on the treads and screw back in. I just want to know if the 8th Gen models are the same before I take off my bumper.

I called my local Honda dealer but they were absolutely hopeless and said the metal retaining clip is held in by a plastic clip on the housing and if the metal retaining clip had fallen off then I would need to buy a new headlamp unit in excess of £300!! Oh, plus fitting at approx £140. I don't think so! I feel they are just trying to get me in and fleece me..hence my posting here..

Oops, sorry... on both accounts!

I'm not sure about the retaining clip but it's a 45 min job to take the bumper off take light out and change lamp.
put back together and job done.
I tried going through the wheel arch as the book says and found this to hard when fitting HIDS
If you say the clip has come off you will need to take the bumper off IMO

Yip, I agree, the method in the manual is hopeless...it was difficult enough going through the engine bay on the 7th Gen but the 8th gen is nigh on impossible as access is even worse.

I know I will need to take the bumper off, I am not phased by this, I just don't want to take it off to find out I do need to go away and buy a new /used headlamp. I would rather do everything only once.. All I need to know is if the metal retaining clip is held in position by a screw or a plastic clip..

What HIDS system did you put in?? Was it expensive as I would really like brighter lights.. Would be ideal to upgrade when bumper is off.

New headlamps are £99 on Ebay:

I think you'll be lucky John if anyone knows how that clip is held on. I would have a bet it just hooks in the plastic moulding on the headlamp, does it look like anything goes in the end of it?

Hi Rich, thanks for the links. The diagram will be very useful when it come time to take the bumper off!!

Yeah, I just wish I could get someone to take a photo of the inside the rear of a headlamp unit showing the low beam, just like the 7th Gen one below. You can see there is a screw attaching the metal retaining clip at the bottom of the pic, I just need to know if the 8th Gen is the same before I take off the bumper..

The clip looks the same on the 8th gen from memory so hopefully will be an easy fix.
If the thread has been striped it's an easy fix to go up a size and re thread of needed
