Changed front and rear pads on my 2005 diesel saloon with no apparent dramas. Pistons wound back ok, the near side rear was quite stiff but not overly so. Correct pads fitted, I.e with notches on the rear pads, but when I had finished I pumped the brake pedal to set the new pads up, when I start the engine the pedal goes to the floor under constant pressure. Any ideas? Cheers

Are you sure you're not pressing the clutch or accelerator
sorry just had to

check you've not left the reservoir cap off and have agood look for fluid leaks around the calipers and hoses, also did you wind the the rear pistons back in or just force them by pushing. It's normal for the brakes to feel spongy the first few presses but only a few

hope this helps

It sounds like the brakes need bleeding.
Is there any sign of leaking brake fluid anywhere

With the engine running and vehicle stationary when you keep pushing on the brake peddle it goes to the floor eventually yeah? If so this has been mentioned before and my car does this also and always has done. However with engine turned off you can pump the peddle rock hard. I wouldnt worry about it.

Double post merged

Yeah strange indeed I cant remember if mine did it before the pads were changed or not in all honesty but its done it for as long as I can remember. Car just passed mot as well the other month.

Mine does it, as did the Audi A8 before and the Volvo T5 before that... as long as its solild when engine is off and its only creeps down ( i.e. that under heavy braking you aren;t going to run out of brake pedal movement) it appears to be normal for some cars.

one "trick" to try is to jam a piece of wood or something between the drivers chair and the brake pedal overnight so the brakes are held "on". this has helped me bleed a few cars where they seemed to be constantly suffering bubbles. Mainly classics but also worked on my Honda Varadero... (cut up innner tubes around the twistgrip and brake lever ).

cheers mate, just never come across it before, feels to me like there's air in the system but that's impossible,x as I didn't break into the hydraulics

My mates Saab does this as well, we couldn't figure out why, he hasn't crashed and died yet though so can't be that bad.

I was racking my brains trying to figure it out, and the only thing I could think it was was the brake master cylinder, thought the seals may have been perished allowing the pedal to travel right down. but listening to you lads I'm not that worried now.

Yep my Audi 100 did it as well as a few Ive owned but cannot remember which, has to be something to do with the master cylinder .

i changed my front and rear pads over the weekend and once i had checked everything i took tue car for a slow drive.... it took atleast 6-8 full pushes of the brake pedal to get the brakes working correctly again.

Just an update, after I took her for a drive yesterday everything seems ok, brakes are nice and responsive, pedal feels spot on. Very strange, changed hundreds of brake pads and shoes in my time, never come across this issue before. have come across this before but not after changing pads, only when the master cylinder had threw It's hand in.
