Hi guys,

After successfully removing and cleaning TB and IACV, upon reassembly and startup i was shocked to see an idle of 2000rpm! Further inspection indicated the throttle cable was a little tight, engaging the throttle ever so slightly. A quick loosen reduced this to the region of 1000 -1250rpm. My first thought was that the throttle cable was sticking a little and funnily enough, if hook my foot under the gas pedal and knock up slightly it reduces the idle toward the base line (still slightly higher around 800rpm depending on how warm she is)-although this does not happen every time. My question is do you guys think I have disturbed something mechanically and will have to reset the idle rpm manually..or was a disconnected battery for an hour or so not enough to reset the ECU? I have been on several drives since and the warm idle is in the region of 1000rpm. Cold startup rpm is 1250rpm. Car does pull better now tho after the clean up :)

Cheers,
Rob.

Yes 1hr is plenty to reset the ecu, its possible to see 1800rpm on cold idle without any issues at all. Engine my not drop below 1000rpm if it got to run auxiliaries. Check for heater blower, elctric wing mirrors, seats if you got them, rear window heater etc. 1 or 2 of those be enough to load the engine up to 1000rpm.

cheers 4th gen'er,
Only thing on was the heater fan. Would you just live with it rather than start playing with idle adjust screw.

Yeah leave it for a week or so, see if the ECU adjusts accordingly. If not you can simply adjust it a tad.

It's my understanding that the 6th gen doesn't have an idle adjust screw?

There is something on the throttle body but it is factory set and shouldn't be adjusted after that. It's not like the 5th gen.

If you can change the rpm by lifting the pedal a bit then wouldn't the throttle cable still be a little too tight? If you press the cable with your thumb before it joins the throttle body I thought it should just deflect slightly without causing the winding bit to bite and move?

It should deflect by 10-12mm between the locking/adjusting nut and throttle body. In other words it shouldn't be taut when pressed.

^^^Spot on dude. B)

Hi Rob, the throttle cable is a bowden cable, similar to that used to operate the brakes on a bicycle. The two ends of the outer part of the cable locate in a sockets, which may have an adjuster to take up slack in the cable. Sometimes the outer cable can come out of the socket and rest on the edge of it, effectively making the inner cable shorter by five or six millimetres. This could produce the symptoms you have described, so it would be worth checking that both ends of the outer part of the bowden cable are seated properly in their respective sockets.

I'd second that, worth checking for sure.

Also didn't think the 6th gen had an idle adjustment screw?

Yeah i done some research appears not on the 1.8, so for the OP the only manual way of adjustment is the throttle cable it self.

My advice though would be leave that alone in spec deflection.

1000rpm is not a concerning issue at all, a lumpy or irratic one however is.

Thanks for the input guys. I have just slackened throttle cable just a touch to give a bit more deflection. Will keep an eye on it.

Cheers!
