Recent hot weather have had the AC on and cabin re-circ. Now back to the normal scottish crap weather just put the demister on with external intake and there is a horrible dampy stale smell coming into the cabin, any advice how to sort, new cabin filter fitted and no change. Thanks.

You can buy aircon cleaner, I think Wurth make it, it has a very long plastic tube that sprays disinfectant into the evap. unit and cleans it as it drips out the condensate tube.
I would start there.

I would turn it off and leave the car outside in hot weather with all orifices open (boot/bonnet/doors) to let the moisture evaporate as much as possible

There was a claim of old still water stored in cars (often the container for windcreen washer fluid, a plastic pouch like a hospital drip) that bred either Legionnaires or psittacosis.

You can build a simple ozone generator by buying a sterilising UV-C lamp on aliexpress and build that into an enclosure with a slow fan. Leave it in your car for a few hours. Optionally with the airco or heater on to circulate the gas through your ducts.

Ozone oxidises organic molecules by donating elementary oxygen. Be warned - this includes the insides of your airways and surface of your eyes. It is not exactly hydrochloric acid but treat it with some respect. Don't use this procedure continuously because plastics and rubbers are also organic chemistry. Consider ozone as deoderising shock treatment when nothing else has worked. Also read up a bit on UV-C and learn why I recommend putting the lamp in a box rather than leaving it on inside your car.
