Hello All, I'm on holiday in France and on the way down went into limp mode about 80miles from destination. Managed to make it, but car was very unhappy by the time I got there with it cutting out a couple of times after slowing down and pulling away from roundabouts.

Next day it was fine again, though after a relatively long run light came on again and back into limp mode. But other than that fine, and on next start all well again.

I happened to have a genuine fuel filter which I changed after buying a tool kit from France's version of B&Q. It started straight away (very surprised) anyway after hard acceleration it hesitated a few time and the light came on again.

So i guessing I might have air trapped, is there a correct way to bleed a facelift mk7 cdti? I connected the priming bulb side first and pumped it till fuel came out the outlet of the filter, then connected that hose and primed it a bit more, is it just a case of giving the bulb a few squeezes now and then. My return journey is Saturday, I don't fancy around 800 miles in limp mode!

Thanks for the speedy reply and advice, I'll give that a go then tear up and down the local roads a few times.

OK, engine still being starved of fuel. I have noticed though that the priming bulb is being sucked flat, so there must be a blockage of some sort between the tank and bulb. Any suggestions on how to clear it would be greatly appreciated!

Get to a garage and beg to use the air line, Remove the inlet side pipe on the filter and blow back to tank? or have you replaced the pipes correctly after refitting the filter, the book stresses that they should go back on as they came off, i.e same bends and clip positions undisturbed.

Thanks edgeoftime, unfortunately I hit a French national holiday so everywhere was either closed or unable to help. We're home but car is stuck in some garage somewhere in France - hopefully I won't be hit with a big bill - we shall see!

I might pay them! Car still in France, I suspect it's been sent to the most inept one they could find, as they've still not come back with what they thinks wrong.

It's coming home, woo hoo! Well in three weeks time anyway. The insurance company have finally given up on the garage so its being returned unrepaired on the back of a lorry. I'm quite please as I'm not sure I'd have had faith in any work they did and suspect I'd have had to pay for lots of parts it probably didn't need. Less happy I'll have been without a car for nearly 2 months. Anyway I'm still of the view its a blocked fuel line between tank and filter, at least now I'll be able to take a look myself.

Woo hoo, car is home. It's minus various nuts and bolts and the battery is totally dead and refusing to charge. Looks like the garage just shut the bonnet when they heard the the car was being sent home.

New battery fitted and with the aid of a big syringe I've cleared the blockage. Priming bulb now staying inflated and car running fine. I guess all the crud in the line is back in the fuel tank though. Will get my local garage to clean that out properly I think.

Do you have one of those puncture repair kits? i.e. bottle of goo and an electric pump, if so then buy a tyre valve take the reed out and you have a fairly efficient air line, could have saved you a lot of aggro! do not ***ume the worst, Honda are only motor cars and basic knowledge will generally sort things out. Good to hear you are sorted though.

Thanks for the tip, my syringe plan didn't work for very long. A few days later the priming bulb was back looking like this when the car is running, no error codes or management light, but still not right:

So decided to investigate a bit further and pulled out the fuel pickup thingy from the fuel tank, me thinks this is the problem! The filter pops off easily with just a clip that needs sliding off. the tank its self looked pretty clean, a few small bits of dirt still in there, but the majority stuck on the filter

after a bit of cleaning it looks a lot better and priming bulb is back to normal, can't get the car go into limp mode now let alone conk out.

Was my fuel tank particularly dirty, is this normal!?

Good work! Makes me feel the compulsion to check mine now!!

I wish I'd taken a look whilst down in France as it only took about 20mins in the end, i think I had fear the problem was worse and we were departing the following morning. It would have saved me all the hassle with the breakdown company though.

Lift up back seat
lift up carpet
Unscrew 3 screws on the shiny metal cover
unclip pickup and return fuel lines
unclip fuel level sensor
unscrew 10 or so 10mm bolts
carefully lift out pickup ***embly

In hindsight we'd do a lot of things differently.

Great that you found the fault, corrected it, and can have renewed confidence in the car.

My car broke an oil pump chain 4 days after I bought it. I'd even already bought the chains to go in the motor!
Now that's a costly mistake!
New low mileage '09 N22A2 motor with new chains finally finished last night, and it sounds sweet.
It'll take a few weeks of running round till I'm happy and can put it behind me.

Couple of little jobs to do, and I'll be back in business!

I'll add checking the fuel filter to that list.
