2001 Accord se vtec
I've only had my Accord for a week but I've been told I can advance the vtec so that it kicks in earlier, is it possible? Is it a dumb thing to do?

I had one of these on my old Prelude Vtec and i had the Vtec arriving at about 4200 rpm any earlier and it was pointless. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Apexi-V-AFC-2-VTEC-control-air-flow-converter-/230785536400?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35bbe3d190

Whether it works with a 1.8 or is worth it is a completely different matter.

I saw one of these VTEC adjusters on ebay the other day, on the 1.8 having it come in any earlier than it does would be pointless, because at motorway speeds you would constantly be in the VTEC range and you would be able to watch your fuel gauge drop as you drove along!

Mine is 2.0l if that makes any difference

Best way to go, if you decide to do it, would be to see what RPM your cars sits at at 70mph, then adjust the VTEC to kick in say 500-750rpm above that, then at least you can cruise without sitting on the VTEC all the time. Mine is at around 3200rpm when I'm at 70mph and the VTEC kicks in at 4000rpm, so there wouldn't be any point in adjusting mine, if yours sits around 2500ish, then you might get away with adjusting the VTEC to 3000-3200 rpm, giving you more power at the top end, but retaining efficiency at the bottom end. That is ***uming the VTEC still kicks in at 4000 on the 2.0??

3000rpm seems a bit low. If you have it kicking in to early it is counter productive. I found this out on my Lude when playing with the timer, To early and you lose power.

Hey Adam,

There is no point in advancing the VTEC engage in any other Honda apart from those with engines such as the B16/18 H22/23 etc etc.

The vtec in say the F18B2 or F20B6 engines is there more to keep the car accelerating rather than give any performance gains once in Vtec. i.e there is no 'kick' once it hits that magic RPM band.

Also things like Vtec controllers are cheap fo a reason. The only real way to lower the Vtec engage is to get a standalone ecu.

If i were you dude i'd fit an induction kit and enjoy the noise once it hits the cross over. B)

Induction kit is already on ;) The noise is entertaining for sure. So you reckon leave these controllers alone??

Yes mate. They really aren't worth the hassle of fitting. Just enjoy the intake sound that comes from the car. Which kit did you go for?

The car came with an AEM cone gaffer taped(I kid you not!!) on where the OE airbox was. I work at a steel stockholder so I will be "liberating" some tubing to set the cone further down to where the resonator box sits in front of the wheel.
I do have a mate who tunes cars for a living, kinda specailizes in Hondas too. Gonna nip the car over there pretty soon to see what he can do. I used to buy my nitrous from him but on this car I've decided against the NoS route, gas never lasts long enough!!

Gaffer taped on, excellent!

Gaffer tape?!?!?!?!?!?!

Darko for some reason i want to say that the Vtec kicks in about 4100 rpm. Not too sure why. It's been a while since i last drove a 6th gen that wasn't mine.

Vtec opens about 4500rpm. 70mph is just over 3000rpm. And the gaffer tape made me laugh too when I first saw it. As soon as the bank holiday is over and I'm back at work I will be trading the gaffer tape for steel pipe!!

The vtec kicks in at 4250 rpm. Igs amazing what you find people have held things together with in cars. As i have reinstalled my cai this weekend i brought a new cone but found it more restricted than before so went and brought an inverted cone like I had before and it makes such a difference in just what cone you have on the end.
