When we were driving back from Rome 2 weeks ago a knocking developed going round left hand hairpins in the Alps on the right front of the car.
It sounded like the o/s/outer CV ,so yesterday I went to the local motor factor and bought one along with 2 new rear wheel bearings /hubs as they had started to whine a bit (no free play though) ,and a set of front and rear discs and pads.
The rear of the car was done in no time but the CV caused a few problems .
On refiting it the clip came out of its grove and was damaged so a second new one had to be fitted, then as I drove it out of the workshop the Anti lock brakes activated as I came to a halt.It continued to do this ,so back in to the workshop. It soon became clear that the "teeth" for the speed sensor pick up on the new CV joint were not in line with the sensor.
On cheeking with the parts shop all the stock had the ring in the same place on the cv joint about 7mm to one side of where it needed to be to line up with the sensor.
As the ring is a seperate part fitted to the cv I thought I would try and move it using a brass drift and hammer.
It worked ,moved to the correct position all is now well.
The damage CV was not charge for as the clip was the only damage and the part fitted cost £46 plus vat ,the Honda part is £246 plus vat,so I could fit another 4 and still be ok at that price !!
The rest of the parts totaled £249 and are all OE quality from major bearing and brake manufactures.
I have also had the aircon rad and pipes done at Honda prior to the trip and all work ok in temps over 35 c.
A set of Michelin energy tyres is next on the list of things to do and a new head light washer pump motor.
Other than that there is little else to do for the time being ,so the next trip to Annecy in July awaits as the car has now clocked up 94,000 miles from new in Jan 2003 ,the 100,000 mile mark should be passed some time this year.
