Now bearing in mind the current state of the country's pot holed roads which aren't exactly doing our cars any good, but is there an age / mileage whereby we should consider replacement of wheel rims? Thoughts anyone?

It all depends on how much kerb damage, if any get buckled or not. How long is a piece of string ?
It could be a year or three years there are many alloy wheels refurb companies out there but the cost is about £300 -£400. So unless your alloys are worth Refurb its better to buy new ones.
