Loud whine

Hey guys

I'm having an issue I have never seen really.
I have a 2005 accord sport I-CTDI and I have been hearing this whine sound coming from the car when accelerating. When the clutch is pressed the sound is gone. Anyway this was bad enough however I drove it for about 100 miles and suddenly a loud whine louder than any other that can be heard from pretty far away starts to howl. I have no power when it howls at all but it will sometimes if I keep my foot planted will just stop and power comes back or if I change gears it might go or may stay.
We have listened to the engine thinking it was turbo and are convinced its coming from the other side of the engine block to the turbos.
I took it out the next day and the whine is worse and the loud howl only comes after like 30 mins?
I might be able to stick a recording on at some point maybe if it helps?

Any ideas?

I can only suggest that you have a badly leaking intercooler or intercooler pipework... this can make quite a noise when the turbo comes on boost (and would make a noise remote to the turbo). You wouldn't be under boost conditions when pushing the clutch pedal, so I think that's a red herring. I'd carefully check the pipework from the turbo to intercooler to inlet... maybe hold a short piece of hosepipe to your ear and probe around with the other end, but the fault may well be undetectable when not under boost conditions?

A recording might help, but often recordings don't sound the same as reality and you lose any directional info.
 
Agree with Jon based on the info I would check IC piping first.

At your own risk get someone to blip the throttle hard while you listen under the bonnet.
 
if the car is exhibiting a boost leak then there would be obvious black smoke comming from the exhaust due to boost pressure loss.

While I agree that the MAF sensor would effectively read high due to an air leakage and hence lead to over-fuelling, wouldn't the ECU also see the much lower MAP sensor reading and thus correct the fuelling to a large extent? I believe that with the standard/oem ECU map you can overfuel quite a bit before black smoke becomes really noticeable.
 
Hey guys just thought I would update.

It's definately the turbo. The bearing was broken and the turbo was seized so the previous owner must have destroyed it or not maintained it. Thanks for the help though guys. Your input was useful and helped me out :)
