Noisy engine when cold

I just noticed that engine is very noisy when started early in the morning - it's some sort of loud metallic rattling (timing chain..?) - The noise can only be heard when it's really cold outside (that's why I didn't notice it before) and disappears pretty quickly after a minute or two. I'm thinking of taking it to a garage but would have to leave it there overnight which is not ideal.

The car has done only 56k (I've got it for just over a week) so clearly timing chain should be in good nick..? Can anyone advise?

Hi Rob, mine is also a 2.0 but on a 07 plate, never had this in my nearly 3 years of ownership, thought I did have to change my fan belt this winter, was making a slight noise in the cold when starting up in the morning, but thats gone now the new belt has been fitted. I would check and make sure its not anything simple before leaving it in overnight etc...

thanks - I was trying to locate the noise but it's really hard to tell - it's coming from the left side, I thought it might be a bearing problem on the pump, alternator or one of the pulleys but I think the noise wouldn't disappear that quickly..?
 
when you say the left side? are you locating this from sat in the car or from the outside?

my fan belt was making this similar noise for about 3-4 minutes and then it would go perfectly normal, suppose thats enough time for the belt to warm up, it never did this in the good weather we had recently, but now that I replaced the belt its gone completely and back to normal...

Left side when looking at the engine from the outside - would the belt make such a noise..? Did you replace all the pulleys as well?
 
well mine made a noise yes, and I just replaced the belt mate
 
jav bro how much was it roughly for the auxiliary belt? I need to change that and the pully as its making a hell of a racket now
 
fitted it myself, bit of pain, really need two pairs of hands to be able to do it quickly lol
 
Sounds awfully like a alternator if its anything like the diesel one which starts with exact same symptoms. Next time it makes it blip the throttle several times if the noise goes try and look for a distict click/clunk sound thats the clutch on the alty engaging.

I'm not sure though if the petrol has the same alternators but on the diesel its the clutch/pulley that goes.

May be squirt some wd40 on the belt next time you hear it to eliminate that but I would of thought the belt would be more of a screech than a rattly noise.

Here's a short video (on youtube)- cold engine start, the rattling can be heard distinctively from the outside near the front wheel

 
How is your aircon working.?? Sounds pretty similar to mine when my compressor seized. The bottom pulley.

air-con's working perfectly fine - also makes no difference to the noise when I turn it off...
 
You need a very low profile 14mm socket

Just to finish off the topic - I started the engine with the belt taken off and it was nice and quiet so came down to Honda dealer got a new belt, popped it on and the noise was gone! It was a bit tricky to do as you need a very long spanner or something to use as leverage to move the tensioner (hoover extension pipe did the job well)

The indicator on the belt tensioner moved a bit and it's right in the middle of the long strip - it was right between the two before. I guess that's because the new one is a bit tighter..
