Evening all,

Whilst driving today my battery light flashed up.

Continued to drive home and then the ABS light came on, as did the fuel light and the petrol gauge dropped to empty as my stereo flashed on and off.

I've got the OBD scanner on it which showed up no codes.

Now the car won't start up at all, I just get a clicking noise.

Is it just a case of a dead battery?

Sounds like a dead battery, but you might want to check that its not the alternator that gave up. Do you have access to a multimeter to read voltage?

I don't tbh. A mate of mine could have one though so I'll give him a shout.
Is it normal for the speedo and everything to drop when the battery has given up then?

I'd say battery aswell, which should not discharge whilst being driven so as above if you can check alternator and connections

Ive had dash displays do funny things in the past which turned out to be the battery

Fit a new battery then check the alternator, but the car will show up a light if the alternator is fecked.

Yes it's normal for everything to die when the battery is low. I remember thinking my clocks had died when moving the car after taking the alternator off!

I'm guessing if there is not enough power from the battery or being fed from the alternator that you could see that. A good battery should read about 12.6v, then with the engine running about 14v if the alternator is good.

There could be other issues, like the ignition switch causing it to cut out as has been mentioned on here before or even a bad earth might but both those would unlikely result in the clicking battery - usually the sound of a dead/dying or uncharged battery.

I'd have thought the the alternator packed up and then drained the battery, then once the battery had no juice it died.

The clicking noise is the starter solenoid pulling in, then releasing as the starter motor draws so much current the battery voltages drops. But once it releases, the battery voltage recovers enough to pull the solenoid back in and the cyle continues causing a repetitive clicking noise when you hold the key in the 'start' position.

It could well be the battery, but I'd definitely check the alternator first!

...depends on what's wrong with it and how good you are at fixing things!

Easy to check how well it's working though, as described by Andy in post #7 (I would do the running test with the headlights on full and the HRW on as well).

It's worth checking the battery connections and the earth connection onto the chassis and engine - a corroded or loose connection could produce the symptoms you describe.

Doh!

The AA came out yesterday and told me the alternator is knackered so i've got a replacement.

Are they easy to replace? The AA guy said it should take me about an hour.

Fairly easy! Undo battery connections and alternator connections, slacken the adjustment to allow the belt to come off, then undo the mounting bolts and wiggle it out.

Hardest part is wiggling it out of the top mount (corrosion!) but you can make this easier to refit by sanding off the corrosion and adding some grease before refitting. Getting belt back on correctly onto the bottom pulley isn't great either...Not much room

Apart from that its very easy! I've done much harder cars!
