Ive had a couple of small concerns with my car for a few months now and im determined to get them resolved whilst i still have some spare cash. Ive posted on here about them before but ive had some slightly conflicting opinions since. I know its impossible to diagnose things without having the car to hand but as the ***le says, im just after peoples opinions/best geusses before i start spending money on it.
My car is a 2.0 2003 with full service history and 95k miles;

A ) I get an occasional knock from either side under the car when braking. Doesn't happen every time but is most frequent when its been left for a few hours and then manouvered out of a parking space. The tyre/suspension specialists I took it to recently couldnt find anything obvious but thinks its probably a 'steering rack end'?

B ) There is a 'tappet' sound from the engine (can be heard from inside the car) when its cold and from what ive read and heard im fairly convinced its the vavle clearences. Spoke to a guy who has worked with cars most of his life and has been with Honda for a few years now. He said not to worry and wouldnt bother messing with them. What do you think?

If the tappets are noisy, then why not get the valve adjustment done, it is shown as a recommended action every 2 or 3 years i believe, but I'm also told to get it done only if it needs it.

As for the suspension knock, is it abs/vsa kickin in maybe, have you changed the brake fluid since you've had the car. The problem as you said could be steering related but I'm sure you'd notice it more than just when the car is started up. :unsure: :unsure:
 
yeah ive got the same tapping sound from my top end, you have to be careful as some people say a loosy tappet is a happy tappet and if there too tight they can eat into the head?...
 
Do you have pattern brake pads in the car, they can knock/clunk in the carrier sometimes.

Make sure your running correct grade oil, depending on when last done it's always good to check clearances. You can do this yourself with a set of tools and gauges.
 
Ive seen the guide to doing valve clearences in the DIY section and in theory it sounds simple enough just a bit tedious. Im not sure im confident enough to tackle it though and I dont have a torque wrench or feelers so was thinking about getting local Honda garage to do it.
Sal, how do I identify if I have pattern brake pads?
