Hello again Guys.

I purchased a '00 reg 1.8S man on Tues (two owner, 84k miles with service history), didn't really get to drive it, just a few miles on a motorway then dropped it off at mates for a full inspection. I wasn't too happy with what I reckoned was excessive front end float and steering that was too light. Anyway, I got a call today with the low down on what the car needs.

1. Full service - Air & fuel filters, Plugs, Pollen filter, Engine oil & filter, Brake fluid change, 2 x wiper blades. Brake pads and discs all good, h/brake good. Front pads will be due at the next service. No steering or suspension faults found. 2 x bulbs required.

2. Both front tyres required.

3. Timing belt due & both cam & crank oil seals leaking. Fitting complete kit including w/pump (along with fresh coolant) both shaft seals, balancer shaft belt & oil seal plus seal retaining bracket (a Honda retro fit part & small money too, wouldn't have known about this if I hadn't joined up here, so thank you club). Alt & Pas belts to be replaced also.

So, all in all not too bad & nothing unexpected. I'll need to attend to a few jobs myself.

1. There's water ingress into the boot (great fun & games with that no doubt!).
2. I've got to replace the missing n/s mirror glass.
3. Renew the remote battery,
4. Repair a very minor damage to the rear bumper.
5. Check & adjust tappets (just for my own peace of mind),
6. Clean out the EGR system,
7. Lub all hinges & locks,
8. Change the g/box oil,
9. Investigate a very minor bit of play in the gear lever - anybody got advice on this?
10. Consider regassing the air con.

Then:

Locate a leather st.wheel & g/knob
Fit new no.plates
Carry out major valet.
Fit new carpet mat set.

Ah, the joys of buying a 12 year old motor!

Well, I collected the car last Saturday week after it's service and have since done close on 800 miles (mixed driving with some rapid motorway blasts), it's driving very well too and I'm happy with the mpg, averaging 35. As you can see from my original post on the car I wasn't happy with the suspension or the steering but as there was no faults found while the service was being done and no faults recorded at it's NCT test (MoT) 2,000 miles prior, I've put these 'issues' down to characteristics of these Accords compared to the likes of the Mazda & Merc I was driving but, I still don't recall my 6th Gen back in 2001 being the same, possibly age has taken it's toll on this cars suspension in general. Overall the car does feel better since originally driving it, I reckon the two new tyres it got on the front made a worthwhile difference.

Anyway here's an updated detailed account of the work carried out for those interested.

Service: Eng. Oil & Filter, Air Filter, Pollen Filter, Plugs, BFC, Wiper Blades, Timing Belt, Balancer Belt, Tensioner & Pulleys, Crank Oil seal. Checked for OBD codes and a general inspection including a road test. Plus: 2 x Tyres & a n/s Mirror Glass.

I've attended to: Front side light bulb, Hazard Warning Light switch bulb, Remote battery and Injection cleaner (will be using it initially for the next 1,200 miles or so).

Next, the to do list. Some are very important (see items 1-3 :D ) including a full valet along with claying & polising the paint! :D

1. Fit Leather St.Wheel - ordered from eBay.
2. Fit Leather Gear Lever gaiter - eBay.
3. Fit plain black alloy JDM Gear Knob - eBay.
4. Cut & Code original new Honda Key - eBay.
5. Fit 'new' Remote case - eBay.
6. Change Fuel Filter.
7. Gearbox oil change.
8. Engine coolant change.
9. Clutch fluid change.
10. PAS fluid change.
11. Set Tappets. Rocker Cover gasket kit - eBay.
12. Strip & clean: ERG valve & Plate, Throttle Body & Air Valve. Fit new Injector seals - Honda for the gaskets and seals from an Fuel Injection specialist.

And them! :

Fit Oil pressure & temperature gauges & look into getting better stereo speakers.

That's it so far!!!

Wow. Don't really know what else to say about the level service you've given the car dude!!! Much respect to you for that!

If you keep looking after the car as you are now then you shouldn't have any problems with it all.

Good luck with it and keep us informed as to your progress dude.

Cheers Simon. I think the effort and the costs are worth it to keep it in good nick. Considering the relatively low mileage (84k) and the value for money these cars generally offer it's worth my while to have it right and the way I want it, see important purchases 1-3 ;) . I'll have spent the purchase price again on it but, hey it's a Honda that's good to drive, has jewel of an engine, the spec ain't bad for a basic model which gives me all I really need for day to day driving and it's o.k. on the juice too - 104 mile round trip today on A & B roads, it returned 36mpg (brim to brim).

Anyway, for a laugh and for my own records I'll update as other bits & bobs are sorted. I've no access to a garage here in Dublin and I'm a bit short on spare time so I'd expect progress to some what on the slow side, I'll stick at it all the same.

How have you got on with the water in the boot? When I bought mine the wheel well was about 3 inches deep in water and the carpet was sodden, I dried it all out and haven't had any problems since, so I'm a little confused as to how it got there!

The minute I got the car I removed the drain bung in the spare wheel well as like you and no doubt many others there was a pool of water, I also removed the wheel along with the boot floor cover to let dry out. Anyway, no water build up since (no surprise) but, yesterday I noticed not one but two leaks (they look very minor but enough to fill the boot over time), both coming from what looked like the bottom corners of the light clusters - that's just a bit of speculation on my part at this time. So, I'll have to do a proper investigation. I'll keep you posted, I'm hoping some sealant on the lamp seals will be the simple cure.
