Poor MPG and Hesitation

Hey guys I need some advice....
I've been doing motorway driving for the past few days and have been getting 28mpg. I know town driving 28mpg is quite normal but I expected a bit more on motorways. Maybe there's something wrong.
Also when I start the engine cold especially in the morning, when I accelerate I get a little hesitation but once it has warmed up it goes away.

Dot know if there is an issue or not. Only had the car for 3 months now. Could it be possibly a dirty egr valve?
 
I have new spark plugs and new air filter. It hesitated before and even after the spark plug replacement.
 
Go to the next step, check your valve lash, an only then go to the EGR valve and EGR plate.

The EGR is quite easy to remove and clean, but the plate harder, you have to remove the injector rail and possibly the injectors.
 
have you changed distributor cap and rotor?

p.s. My fuel consumption lowered for 0.5L/100 km after cleaning EGR plate... it is worth to try to do this.
 
Could be a lot of things, but i can put a lot on the fact that the cold weather is affecting it. You can loose 5mpg or more overall even with a healthy motor.

Be sure to warm the car up for 3-4mins before driving off, this means engine doesnt drive cold, which eats fuel.
 
then why manufacturer recommends driving as fast as possible? this is exactly because cold engine uses more fuel. and uses even twice (compare to hot, I believe) when at idle. because there is ~1500 rpm while cold engine.

I personally recommend ~30s heating - this is that "fresh" oil could get everywhere (specially in crankshaft) and drive after that.
 
How many miles has the car done? Hesitation and poor fuel economy is also a sign of O2 sensors not performing well.

Erm, never have i heard a manufacture say drive as fast as possible :ph34r:

Not twice as much no, but it runs rich, and cold idle 1500-1800 is also a rich point in the rev band, for that exact purpose, so avoiding those revs generally is good too.
 
I was going to do the EGR myself but then thought otherwise. Don;t want to mess things up plus the weather is not so good right now. It's just too cold :)
Personally when I start the car in the morning I wait for about a minute then drive off. I do that just to give the oil time to circulate properly in the engine. I usually don't rev the car and normally very light on the throttle.

@ Shiny...My car has done 98000miles so far. It's a 2000 Accord 1.8 se exec. I thought with a bad O2 sensor it throws up a check engine light or not necessarily?
 
Mine was suffering from hesitation (like the brake was being lightly touched on and off when driving) and it was the O2 sensors.

No eml code came up, although it did when I changed them and the new sensors didn't agree with car (possibly down to the exhaust).

Bought some NTK sensors in the end and all was good.

As said though, it could be one of a number of problems. On my old accord it was down to a failing coil or icm (I forget which now, but I changed them both).

O2 sensors don't last for ever, 100k is about when they often go.
