I have had a horrid screech coming from the belt area, initially diagnowed as being the AC compressor as it would come and go as the AC was turned on and off. However i was sceptical as it happened when the AC was off and i closed the sunroof so didn't pursue that route.

Since then, its got worse with the AC being continually off (so it hopefully shows its not the AC compressor), bad especially from a cold start and over the last couple of days i have had the battery light come on and off intermittently (battery was new in May) so i suspect its something alternator related.

I have removed the alternator and taken it to an auto electricians recommended for checking out alternators (Osbournes in Oldham) however with the belt off notice a little play in the tensioner and also the idler pulley.

Im hoping that its the alternator as this will hopefully be around £100 to fix (I have been told) and it doesnt mean pulling more of the engine apart, however if its not my second thought was get a shorter belt and miss out the idler pulley as this is cause for screeching by all accounts.

lastly, if i have to replace the tensioner is this what i want Tensioner

Or do i just need this bit Just the bearing

Anyone had a similar problem? Am i going about diagnosis the right way, and lastly, how much of a pain is replacing the tensioner - is it just the two bolts and pop it off!

/\ Adam, my car is 2.4 petrol and I've been seeing occasional threads on the aux pulley issue on the diesel, and I just read your DIY thread. Very good write up, I can see why this keeps coming up !!

In the diagrams in your DIY, it's pretty obvious that the original belt layout was done by a Japanese engineer who liked origami, or maybe he had shares in a rubber factory

Cheers Adam, seems the same as mine apart from it screaming even louder. Hopefully the auto electrician will be able to service the alternator as something is clearly not right due to the battery light coming on and then i plan on doing this.

Did you notice any play in the tensioner bearing by any chance. Just wondering if this is going to need replacing also?

Also, did you just use a Honda replacement belt? I noticed on some yank sites they recommend different belts but personally wouldnt know where to start.

Cheers

I looked at the tensioner but all seemed ok to me. The aux belt was a genuine Honda one. I like to keep things like that Honda brand as I knowing been properly manufactured

Fingers crossed it works otherwise there will be one EX Tourer for sale as im getting fed up of throwing money at her now!
