Has anybody changed the bearing on the power steering pump? Mine makes a horrible noise occasionally. I can clear the noise by reving the engine. Alternatively I can turn the radio up.

Rob are you 100% its the power steering bearing look hear.

Thanks Brett
I'm sure it's coming from the top of the engine, around the power steering pump pulley. It can happen anytime after a run, before a run, even sitting in traffic. I was a bit confused by Al's post about the power steering pump replacement. He said it was replaced but referred to the release bearing,

I was as well mate/ wait and see if Alan comes on line he might be able to explain in more detail.

I wonder if one of CJ's posts is missing from the thread. I'll wait to see if Alan has any ideas.

Can you post a video of said noise? I still have a horrible dry bearing/grinding type noise only things left on mine to change is pas and water pump.

A lot of I-CTDI's sound the same as mine but then others don't so I ***ume there is a generic problem with something mines been like this for the last 15k miles and no signs of anything breaking on it or leaking yet.

If it was the pas would turning the wheel make the sound worst or not as surely putting the pump under load would make the noise more audible? If so mine does not change at all.

mate its most likely your alternator!!

Resurrecting an old thread from the grave...

For the past week I've had similar noises from the belt area. It seems the most common faults are with the alternator or idle pulley, but from the DIY guides I gather these are located closer to the bottom of the engine. So, in hope that I've identified the right part I've uploaded a brief video here: http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OU2ZGP4XTkE

Sorry it's very short - the video was recorded while I pulled over in a bad place like a Londoner! I'm unsure if it highlights the noise is coming from towards the top pulley, which looks like the PAS pump.

Summary of when it happens:
- Hot or cold day or engine, doesn't matter.
- Doesn't occur when I've just started the engine or before I've moved off.
- Usually when very slow or standstill, it clears with reasonable acceleration (e.g. when a queue starts moving).
- Did not clear today when I turned out of a car park, with minimum acceleration or load on the engine.
- Very infrequent - it's happened about 6 times in the past week, over 160 miles of London/M25 traffic which is naturally stop/start.
- My nearest Honda garage (Crown, Bushey nr Watford) had it for a day and couldn't find a fault, presumably because it happens so infrequently.

76k miles on the clock so it's possible the belt tension issues are having an effect on a different component? I see most Accords of this age are EPS, but I'm fairly sure it's hydraulic PAS, as my car's an '07 Sport GT and it gives a lot more steering feedback than cars I know to have EPS.

Any guidance appreciated - I'm happy to DIY if it's possible to swap parts without lifting the car (driveway on slope). I'll consider swapping the bearings out within the pump if they're available. Or at least a sanity check before spending big bucks in a garage!

After a few days since posting I have some news…
- Given up with local Honda garage. They didn’t find the fault after 2 visits, they also offered to have the car overnight to see if it happens with a cold start (despite me saying cold starts are not having an effect)
- My local indy has taken a look at the video and the car running normally – they suggested using a stethoscope or screwdriver against the parts and my ear, so I can pinpoint the noisy component. Obviously I’ll watch out for the belt!
- I have the old-style longer belt routing and idle pulley still in place. Tempted to get this swapped over for the shorter belt, revised routing and get rid of that pulley. Who knows that may ease some of the tension and resolve it?
