Recommendations for a diagnostic code reader please.

Which would be a good model for me to buy for my 2005 CTDi .
And .... sorry to betray my ignorance by asking this .... where does the reader connect to?!

Any OBD2 reader

loads of threads on here about different types, try searching for "OBD2 reader" or "OBD2 bluetooth"

cheapest option is a bluetooth one that connects to an app that runs on a phone (IIRC iPhone has to be WiFi not bluetooth)

Yep iPhone is WiFi only, not Bluetooth. The one I have is called Lujii mini obd2 from Amazon and worked fine on my android tablet using the torque app.
The socket is down by your right knee when sat in the driving seat.

Dash command is a good code reader. I use this and a elm327 Bluetooth adaptor

I bought one of these for £4 of ebay and can confirm works fine with Android.
