Hello

I have Honda Accord 2005 2.0 I-vtec engine.

I am trying to find the best oil for my car (113,000miles)
In the manual for petrol vehicles only says Fuel Efficient Detergent oil with API SJ or SL(2004 cars)
Can I use SM or SN specifications?
Does it matter if ACEA rating is A1/B1, A5/B5 OR A3/B3?

previous owner has been using 5w-30 and 5w-40 (I guess this would be ideal for all season UK driving) oils.

I have seen this oil Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 any expiriences with this oil?
Your addvice would be much appreciated

Marko

The petrol is very tolerance of oil types.

Personally, I use 10w40, other swear by 5w40, etc. In terms of specification A1/B1 or exceeding this is acceptable. Nearly all oils for sale are compatible now., Either way, you can't really go wrong.

Check out Opie Oils, they've a great selection at good prices.

many thanks for your response

does it matter if its A1/B1 , A3/B3 OR A5/B5?

In the manual its says API SJ or SL, would SM or SN be compatible as well?

would 10w-40 offer less startup protection?

ACE A1/B1 the correct specification. I cannot remember exactly, but A3/B3 and A5/B5 is a different specification and does not necessarily "exceed" A1/B1 as the numbers might suggest.

A1/B1 Oil intended for use in gasoline and car + light van diesel engines specifically designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a High temperature / High shear rate viscosity of 2.6 to 3.5 mPa.s. These oils may be unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

A3/B3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance gasoline and car + light van diesel engines and/or for extended drain intervals where specified by the engine manufacturer, and/or for year-round use of low viscosity oils, and/or for severe operating conditions as defined by the engine manufacturer.

A3/B4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance gasoline and direct injection diesel engines, but also suitable for applications described under A3/B3.

A5/B5 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in high performance gasoline and car + light van diesel engines designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a High temperature / High shear rate viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s. These oils may be unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt

Not sure on the API SJ/SL specs either, but I never have a problem getting my exact specification.

Also on the weight, yes 5w40 will provide better start up lubrication as it's thinner. But given our climate in the British Isles, I'm not sure if it's really necessary.

edit - I knew we had a topic on it here:

I wasnt able to locate 5w40 in A1/B1, 5w40 seem to be A3/B3 ACEA rating
I guess A3/B3 would be fine as well?
