Remote Central Locking

Hi,

I'm afraid I'm a new member who's come across your site in search of help with a car problem. I'd really appreciate some help and will try to contribute myself in future.

My car (a 2004 2.4 S-type Touring) has a problem in that the remote central locking is not actuated by the buttons on either key. I have replaced the batteries in both keys, disconnected & reconnected the main car battery, checked that the red LED lights on the keys come on when it's buttons are pressed and gone through Beefy's instructions for re-coding the keys. I thought this had worked as on the 5th cycle of turning the key from position 1 to position 2 and pressing the lock button on the key the central locking "clonked"; but no. The button on the drivers door that works the central locking appears to work most of the time when the ignition is on position 2. I can still move the lock "pegs" on the door tops to lock & unlock each door manually and the key works the driver's door lock and starts the car.

Any suggestions as to what I can try would be very welcome, even if that is to take it to a specialist or dealer!

PS does anyone know where the sensor is that receives the signal from the key is located? I suppose I should check that this isn't obscured, has lose wiring etc.

Reading your thread and re-reading beefy's post below:

lol no phone calls thanks. i have sent you a message omar but didnt know you had started a thread. replacing a window switch shouldnt loose the central locking code of the key but stranger things have happeded. first you need to check the led is lighting on the fob. i ***ume you have the 7gen key? the sequence is turn ignition to position 2 press lock then turn back to ignition 1 position. turn to position 2 and press lock again. keep repeating and on about the 5th time the central locking should lock. that key is coded to the central locking. if you have more than one key, you need to press the lock button on all other keys IMEDIATELY after the cental locking locks when working through the sequence. change all fob batterys.

Can you clarify that you have done the bit highlighted in yellow. It reads to me that you have to keep both keyfobs to hand and as soon as you hear the locking activate press the lock key on both fobs.

Otherwise maybe best to take it into a dealer

Have you got the child proof overide switch on? one of the buttons on the main control locks all doors, and another locks all windows. Just a thought.

Thanks for both your suggestions John & Carl. To confirm, I have pressed both keys lock buttons immediately after the central locking "clunks" on the 5th cycle of position 1, position 2, key-lock-button. I have tried with the doors all locked to begin with (by means of the switch on the driver's door panel) and with all the doors unlocked to begin with - ***ume that this is what you meant John. No luck either way I'm afraid.

On a positive note, I went for a drive today and really enjoyed the car. Very smooth, lovely gear change, supportive seats. In the big scheme of things the central locking issue is just a detail - it's as much admitting defeat that is frustrating as anything! Maybe it's time to make friends at my local Honda emporium as yo suggest Carl. I can see a door getting left unlocked otherwise and the prime motivator for getting the car was so I can cart bikes about without fear of them getting half-inched.

If it's any help I'm wondering whether the receiver unit in the driver's door (it houses the internal c/locking switch, 4 wdw switches and the passenger wdw locking switch might be the culprit). I could be completely wrong, but one of my rear wdw switches developed a fault and wouldn't retract the wdw. Thinking I was a clever-cloggs, i got a 2nd hand part off ebay, swopped the unit but then found I couldn't remotely operate the tailgate....turned out I had got a part from a saloon...duh!! Anyhow after much messing around, refitted original part and have just put up with fault!

Out of curiousity can you remotely operate yr tailgate?? If not, I'm wondering if the fault is down this big switch unit. Unfortunately IF this is the problem, a new switch unit ain't cheap...200 quid plus fitting at yr local agent

Hi Simon,

The remote button on the key that should open the tailgate doesn't work but the unlock button on the driver's door panel does lock and unlock all 4 doors & the tailgate. I guess this means that the lock/unlock button on the driver's door isn't a saloon part; but thanks for your suggestion.

All things considered I guess either I've not recoded the keys correctly, or the receiver for the key signal is broken (on the basis that it's unlikely that both keys have an identical fault). I'm going to have a few more goes at recoding the keys before admitting defeat. Then I think it's time to buy a workshop manual to locate the receiver for the key signal and test it to see if it's at fault.
