Since going from 16 to 17 inch alloys the road noise increase has been massive.

I knew going bigger was going to make a difference but didn't expect it to be so bad.

I'm conscious that I have 4 tyres which have been worn by another car so they may not be worn the way my car wants to drive.

The front 2 are continental sport contract and rear 2 are pirelli p-zero.

I'm considering buying a pair goodyear efficient grips to replace 2 of these but which 2 should I change?

I would say replace the fronts as the noise from the front will travel to the front part of the cabin.

Recently installed a set of Dunlop bluresponse tyres on the wife's puma and those tyres made a massive difference with road noise.
A very good tyre indeed

I bought a set of 4 goodyear efficient grips for my 17" type s alloys. Altough there labeled as 'medium noise' i think they are really quite! Paid £388 for them installed (€490)

But like already said above, the dunlop bluresponse tires are known to be even quiter.

Dunlop sportmaxx RT is a good quiet tyre too.

I think the downside of having a quiet tyre is that the compound will be quite soft resulting in a tyre that wont be as long lasting
people report average of around 10k miles on these types of tyres

Will definitely try one of these though as the I do prefer a quiet tyre, my uniroyals rainsports 2 are quite noisy on the motorway

I have 18" Efficient Grip Performance all round, very quiet and smooth, noise rating is 69db which is fantastic.

I would suggest you to replace those fast road Pirelli as they aren't any good in wet. And need to drive fast to heat them up for grip.

I just changed from 16s to 17s today (205 to 225 width), with a new set of Coopers. No increase in road noise to report, I had pairs of Michelin and Kumho previously.

Definately fit new tyres on the front, as they will be perfectly even, then you should get optimum noise reduction.

I've also moved from 16s to 17s 225/45 Vredestein ultrac sessanta, pretty comfortable (way too soft sidewalls), not really loud as the Federals I've been driving (really loud, but lots of grip though)

The Dunlop Sport Bluresponse is probably the quietest tyre I've used. Hopefully not as soft as the unroyal rain experts they replaced (Noisy but really gripped in the wet unsurprisingly)

The tyre wear indicator (3 digit number on the sidewall) indicates they should be more hard-wearing but time will tell...

Well I haven't changed them yet because I'm a tight git and all tyres have at least 4mm on them still. Some road surfaces are good, others are terrible but either I'm starting to get used to it or the tyres have bedded in a bit now because it seems less noticeable.

Really want a set of blueresponses for my next set of tyres but £120 each its quite expensive in the 225/45/r17 size .

According to tyre reviews the Dunlop sport max rt seems to be a really quiet tyre too and reasonably priced at £80 per corner for the 225/45/r17 size

Anybody used the sport max rt ?

Had a ride in my friends civic type r yesterday, maybe the road noise isn't so bad in my accord after all!

As the resident noise expert; another vote for the dunlop bluresponse. But I have 15's, The pirelli P-Zeros are utter rubbish in many respects however, or is it the P-6000s, I often confuse the two :)

Oddly enough most of your noise will be coming from the rear, the materials are vastly different between the front and the back; The rears use a lightweight foam + vinyl layer with poor coverage. The front uses a thicker, denser foam and very heavy vinyl layer which you can't even lift up which covers all of the front bulkhead + sides.
