2.4 auto tourer
Hi all.

I am hopefully going to look at some Accords at the end of the week, all 2.4 auto tourers, my only previous experience of a VTEC car is from being in the back of a Civic type R, should I be expecting similar from the 2.4? an increase of power and engine noise from a specific engine rev?

The 2.4 is a fine car indeed but you wont get the vtec roar like a type R

Cheers mate, I forgot to say the Civic has a K&N Typhoon CAI fitted so sounds mental in VTEC, so I'm not expecting anything like that.

Should I expect a noticeable increase in power?

the vtec engine in the 2.4 does not redline until 6k rpm, cuts out at 7,500 rpm...

ish.. lads here will clarify

it is a lively car for sure but you need open roads to exploit it, dont expect much from lazy runs around a town, but it does a decent 0-60 too. apart from that its an excellent car indeed, superb purchase second hand.

the gear changes are something like (for a saloon, tourer a bit slower)

0-30 1st
30-60 2nd
60-90 3rd
90-120 4th
120+++ 5th

:p

The VTEC crossover happens at 6K RPM, redline is 7100. The K24 does more with it's cam phasing to produce better torque output that raw power. Max torque is 4.5K RPM, there's no valve lockup until 6K. I did toy with the idea of lowering the cross over to 5.5K as we have access to the VTEC solenoid, 1K RPM is a narrow power-band, even with the 6-speed MT.

I came from an EP3 to my 2.4 Accord.

The engines are in no way similar. With the EP3 you would hit the redline, change up a gear and remain within the VTEC crossover. In the Accord you hit the redline, change up and you're outside of the crossover again. It's not really an engine to be used for sprinting through the gears in to be honest

Don't expect it to scream and shout like a Civic, it's a more dignified surge. Like others have said, if it's tight and twisty you won't outrun much but on an open road or away from the lights it's a force to be reckoned with.

Thanks lads, I'm not too worried about being quick and nimble through twisties, as long as it cruises nicely and has the grunt if I need it I'll be happy

I used to have a Corolla T Sport, which is more or less the same as the Type R, lift (Toyota's Vtec) kicks in at 6,200rpm and redlines at 8,200rpm. The noise was awesome but to get the most of the engine you needed to rev it everywhere and ideally on fast roads. Most of my driving is around town so it was wasted on me.

When I test drove the Accord the noise was alot quieter but it was still nippy, especially when using kickdown (if you're going for the auto). I tried it on a 30 stretch and it picked up speed very quickly, I had to back off almost straightaway. This is what I'm looking for though, something with more grunt low down so cruising is a breeze but when I need to overtake the power is there.
