rust and rot found very worrying




this is both sides which both have rust on the cross member iv took the bar off the offside caus of the corrosion. this is bad structual rust im guessing. what does the bar do?

Unable to find anything else but could it be a bad repair??? The dark areas are where anti rust treatments are applied during the build.
 
would the car be dangerous would you say with the corrosion on thay beam. mot failure I guess if they see it.
 


iv took that bar off now as all i cant see that it does anything and as the corrosion has eaten the bracket it sits on theres no point it being there
 
If you look at parts 16 and 37 in the URL, they are both beams. They are for crash protection. As they are not part of the main structure one might think that they are not part of the MOT, but on the other hand, they are part of crash protection so they probably are MOT fails. Having said that, the rear beam is easily removed with the rear bumper off, and if the rear bumper was put back without the beam there, no-one would know unless they lightly punched the rear bumper because the beam is not visible with the bumper in place.


edit: likewise with the front beam, if the front bumper goes back without it being there, and if it's not obvious that the beam should be there, then you might get away with it in an MOT. Best to phone a dealer and find out if the price is correct, and how long delivery is. That way, if you take the car for MOT and they say "errr there seems to be something missing up front" and fail it, then if delivery is not 6 weeks (some parts are a long time) then you could buy it, fix it, and go back. Or get the old part welded somewhere else (if the welding is done according to MOT rules then it will pass too). Obviously, this comes with the usual warnings like "I wouldn't recommend driving without a crash protection beam" :lol:
 
That needs replacing mate. I wouldn't bodge anything that is part of the core structural integrity of your chassis.

it's a bolt-on beam.
Is "bolt-on" part of "core structural integrity", or is it "additional crash protection" (either way, I'm not disputing whether it should be there, obviously it should).
 
im gonna get it done properly at local garage. is obviously been like it for a while as iv only had the car 10 months. so its definaltelty gone through 2 mots like it. one was in December last year and it sailed through then. I will try and source a new beam though. as long as its not gonna make the car fall apart in the next few weeks lol

you said it was bolt on but looks welded to me

ah, I mis-understood what you meant when you said "iv took that bar off now" in #9

no idea what is going on there if the part if bolt-on in the diagram but not on the car

edit: mind you, I ***ume that part 16 is bolt-on, can't see that a part like that is available only to be welded on. Rear part 37 is definitely bolt-on
 
ha ha no mate iv only took off the small round bar L shaped. its number 17 on that diagram you posted. called a pipeguard

I've just had a look on my car, the reason it passed MOT is because the front of the beam is not visible in the MOT. I'm not sure if it's bolted on or not, I would have to remove the front bumper on my car to check, but if you say it's not bolted on, then it must be the same on my car.

I'm not sure if it is structural, looks to me like its main purpose is to support the radiator and condenser and a few other bits and bobs. I can't see it helping much in a crash either. Most of a crash would be taken by the main spars of the chassis (crumple zones etc).

But, I could be wrong of course ;)
