2005 Accord 2.4 EX
Hi all,

Going by the service book my accord will be due a service imminently, just waiting for the indicator to come on.

My question is, is it worthwhile having a service done by the honda dealership or am I as well to get it done independently? You see there is no honda dealership locally, and it would mean a ferry trip and some driving in order to have it serviced at one. The mileage is around 62.5k and the car is 7 years old, it has a full honda service history up to date and though I would like to keep this going its going to add around £150 to the cost of service for the pleasure. Is it really worth it?

Also, should I be looking at getting the gear box oil changed or are there any pointers anyone could give me on what to ask to be checked at this service, regardless of where it is done.

A well trained independent should be fine bud. Your in a petrol - so its is virtually indestructible. Also though, you are out of warranty, so don't panic :D
 
Thats my next problem, which independent garage to trust up here. Im not sure who has the best training, we had my gf's peugeot 207 hdi serviced locally by someone I thought was supposed to be very able but got it back to find a hell of a rattling coming from the air intake, though this may just be poor build quality on the peugeots part. Oh the dilemmas of life... lol
 
It was a Pug dude :lol: they don't know how to do anything else but rattle.
 
Well if you want to save some money do it yourself mate or find someone to help you. I think its worth doing service yourself, especially if your car is out of warranty. Find out what you need for service, get the parts, book a week off work (joking lol) and you done! Most of the time its just basic things like air, fuel, oil filters, pollen filter. You can do it!
 
Fair point Dan. Never been a fan of them really but it was the only car within budget that was going to give us the MPG we needed for her 500 mile a week commute. (Just to try and justify it :D) Its been a reliable wee car so far, just not so hot build quality.

Any pointers on fluids to use for my Accord and which other parts I'll need for this service? Im going to try and source the bits myself if getting it serviced independently, since I am highly sceptical of the prices some places want to charge.....

Gathor, I had considered doing it myself - pretty confident I would manage it. Only thing is the car has a full history already and for re-sale purposes it would be good to keep that going, honda or not. Wouldn't have minded getting the anti roll bar bushes and stuff like that looked over too. The car is new to me and I wish I knew a really good mechanic to look over every single thing with a fine tooth comb to see if anything looks worn, no point throwing money at mods if theres necessities needing sorted first
 
I thought with petrols you could use vegetable and bog roll :lol: Us diesels are far more fussy ;).

Just kidding... not sure for petrol - but there is plenty of advise on here.

When servicing your 7th gen, the best advice i can give is to use a GENUINE oil and fuel filter, and then to use 10/40W fully synthetic oil.

In the DIY section I stuck up a simple guide to changing oil filter and air filter for the petrol. just document it in you service book and keep receipts to show you have cared for your car. People expect that the older a car gets it will not always have a full book of honda stamps, but if you can show you have cared for it and kept every piece of paper, it builds a confidence in the next buyer that they are buying a well cared for car. ( to show true commitment, change oil every 6,000 miles for a sweet running engine) :D

Oi! Stop slagging my missus car you lot! haha, only joking - slag away. Everything french I have driven to date feels like it was ***embled as part of a school project, cant fault the diesel engine so far but the rest of the car.... some of the decisions on design begger belief and quality of components used... anyway, enough about the pug - it still needs to last a few months before we sell up as per my grumblings about build quality.

I may just service the accord myself, fuel filter looks like a bit of a hassle though? Looking at silkolene oil and HAMP filter, k&n drop in panel filter, NGK iridium plugs, MTF-3 transmission fluid... anything else I should be looking at?

"WhereamI" you suggest a genuine oil filter... whats the dif between that and a HAMP?

Also... 10/40W or 0/30W - a lot of conflicting advice here, going by the chart in the owners manual I can run it on almost anything - perhaps even red bull. Since its pretty cold here most of the time should I be looking at the 0/30W? Does 10/40W offer more protection but takes longer to start protecting the engine or something?
 
It seems the Veins in non OEM in the filters cause issues with the Accord. Oil filter might not be as fussy but do watch the fuel filter, many problems have been posted where the car wont run well because of the fuel filter not being a OEM.

Cheers Robert, I think I'll go with the silkolene 5w 40 after reading those threads - Unless anyone else wants to jump in and recommend something different. Had the car jacked up today to have a look if anything else was needing done while servicing only to find that the near side front arb linkage has popped... only had the car 3 weeks with a fresh MOT, now going to see if I can get this sorted under my "Premium" 3 month warranty. Some price they want for the genuine linkages, be hoping they dont pop too often. Is there any point just getting one done or should I really be looking at both sides? The rear can wait as Im contemplating getting a bigger rear sway bar fitted anyway.
 
BTW there is no service indicator that will tell you to service the car.
