Excuse the rant but why does nobody seem to check the throttle cable adjustment on cars?

Almost without fail every second hand car I have bought has had play in the throttle cable and needed adjusting and the new Tourer was no different tonight. There was about 10 - 15mm play in the throttle cable which has obviously not been checked since it was built!

Should be included in the service schedule and if it is then it should be completed as it can transform the response of the car !!

Rant over !!

Could you give a guide on how to check this, how to recognize it, and so how to adjust it properly?
I suspect I have this issue. I believe it has to do with the throttle. I feel like accelerator is not responsive enough.
Thanks.

Is this for petrol or diesel ? I'm fairly sure the k24 lump can be adjusted inside a plastic cover under the bonnet. Follow the throttle cable and it's at the rear right hand side of the engine bay iirc. Props to SteveArcade for that one

Mine was the diesel and as above follow the throttle cable across the top of the bulkhead to where it goes into a plastic cover in the top right hand corner of the engine bay. Two 10mm headed bolts will remove this cover and you can then see the cable and how much play is there.

Start the engine and ensure it's warm and then adjust the cable until its just taut but not increasing the speed of the engine.

Hopefully this fixes your problem.

All 7th gen 2.4 engines (pre-facelift and facelift) are Drive By Wire so any slack should be taken up by the DBW system

Pre-facelift 2.0 are mechanical, facelift 2.0 are DBW

All 7th gen 2.2 engines (pre-facelift and facelift) are mechanical
