Speedometer dead on 2006 diesel

Hi everyone,
My 2006 diesel Accord Exec's speedometer needle doesn't move. It has gone from moving in a jerky manner when I first bought the car last September, to not moving at all now. The other dials in the cluster: rev-counter, fuel, temp and digital odometer, and also backlight all function as normal. I pointed out the problem to the Honda dealer during a service (albeit an established dealer, that only in the last year aquired the Honda dealership), and they didn't have a clue, and probably didn't bother consulting with other more experienced service centers.

Any ideas guys? Also, will this problem result in a failed MOT (coming up in January)?

Post yourself an introduction in the Newbie section please... people tend to be a bit more responsive after a nice hello..
 
This is how to put it into self diagnosis mode - look for the needles moving smoothly through their full sweep. If they don't or you don't get a beep, then you need a new gauge control module.

1. Push and hold the trip/reset button.

2. Turn the lighting switch ON.

3. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

4. Within 5 sec., turn the lighting switch OFF, then ON and OFF again.

5. Within 5 sec., release the trip/reset button, then push and release the button three times repeatedly.

I completed the test and while the other needles travelled smoothly, the speedometer needle travelled in a jerking motion up to the 40kph mark, and stayed there until I turned off the ignition. From your post before, just to clarify, could I now need a new instrument cluster module? Is that an expensive job?

Just an additional note to readers of this thread: I found I had to be quicker than the 5 secs between Dan's self diagnosis sequence (more like 0.5sec!) The trip/reset button is by the steering wheel, not the reset button next to the dials (took a few attempts before that dawned on me!). The headlights must be turned 3 increments (low, auto, full) to full low beams each time (no blue high beam light showing). Also, you need to push and release the trip/reset button quite quickly during the last step, and finally (this might be only coincidental), I put on my seatbelt after a few failed sequence attempts, so the red seatbelt light remained off.

Update: Took it to another garage and they replaced the entire cluster module, with a salvaged module from same for £50. Speedo seems to work fine now. Now I need to clock the mileage to the correct reading.
