Steering wheel controls intermittent

Hello
Having failed to track down why my HFT stopped working, I swapped out the control box with no success, my steering wheel volume and channel change controls have now gone intermittent.
According to the garage they think the 'cable reel' needs replacing for which they want £650 for the part
Is this likely, and how hard is it to do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Could it not just be the plug has come loose in the steering wheel.?

disconnect the battery and remove the two torx T30 screws either side of the steering wheel (get a good torx socket from halfords) and pop the airbag off and have a look.
