Sent my car in for servicing on Monday. Drove it home. Tuesday lunchtime noticed there were several litres of oil under the car...

Garage picked it up. Turns out that the sump has acquired a hairline crack. Garage has suggested I pay for a new sump (£298 - I rang Holdcroft and that's the price they gave me, no further discount despite mentioning the forum) and they'll cover the rest of it.

Is this reasonable do you think?

Is this crack in the vicinity of the drain plug?? if so then I reckon a heavy handed "fitter" has been at work. If not then look for scuff marks were it may have been "dropped" onto something. Stand your ground with the garage and demand they put it right, get the trading standards onto it or Dom. Could have been caused by careless jacking.??

Without seeing where the crack is we cannot be sure if it was caused by the garage. However if the origin of the crack is the sump plug then maybe speak with them and try and get them to admit liability.

If the sump was okay before you went and leaking after then that might be enough by itself for the small claims court.

Sumps don't just crack by themselves.

They are a bit cheaper second hand mind.

don't pay for a sump, they don't miraculously break themselves as said above.

get the small claims onto them if they don't pay up.

friggin ridiculous.

Who was the garage by the way was it a main dealer.

No, not a main dealer; a garage I have been using for several years; have quite a good reputation locally.
