'08 i-DTEC EX man 5D
Hi

Sorry for this newbie question but I just spotted that my new (to me) 2008 i-DTEC is a full 226Kg heavier than my old i-CDTI (both manual 2.2L EX models).

And this means that although the i-DTEC has an extra 9bhp (147-138), it's 0-60 time is 0.7 seconds slower (9.8-9.1secs) than the i-CDTI.

Can anyone tell me what all that weight actually consists of? I mean 226Kg that is a heck of a lot of weight - fwiw, it's just over the maximum weight in the leg press machine in my local gym... (!)

But for what benefit?

J

Some of it is crash protection, as the 2008 Accord is a EuroNCAP 5 star rating:

The car is bigger than the 7 th gen

If you compaire the dimensions if the 2 cars then this will give you the weight difference

Is an 8th gen actually bigger than a 7th? When I test drove a few it felt really small, almost like the difference between a focus estate and a mondeo!

I'm not sure about the tourer but the saloon is bigger in the 8th gen

Let me re-check the numbers. I have:
Honda Accord Tourer 2.2 i-CTDi EX 5d
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/honda/accord/tourer-2003/33354/

Weight 1477 Length 4750 Width 2018 ==> Sq M 9.586 Weight/sqm 154.1

Honda Accord Tourer 2.2 i-DTEC EX 5d
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/honda/accord/tourer-2008/40207/
Weight 1703 Length 4750 Width 2110 ==> Sq M 10.023 Weight/sqm 169.9

So by my calculations although the i-DTEC is wider, heavier than it is wider.
i.e. in fact the iDTEC is 15.8kg/sq metre heavier - which is 10.3% heavier by unit area.
That's a LOT!

errr from the first link for the 2.2 i-CTDi EX 5d .....weight = 1602 kg .....weight/sqm = 167.1 :blink: :rolleyes:

That's what I had in mind too. The 2.2 i-ctdi are on the 1600 ish Kg not 1400

Oops that's a bit more like it. I had a nasty feeling it was too extreme to be true.
Correct answer is that the iCTDI is 1602. Re-running the numbers the i-DTEC is 101 Kg heavier. I make that 1.7% heavier per square meter.
Lesson: Dont do the numeric calculations in public very late at night - esp not after a few beers. No, not even if you can't sleep.

Maybe Honda beefed up the steering rack on the 8th gen diesel, wary that owners of Mazda diesels were going to switch to Honda.

Could be. Must be a beast of a steering rack... ;)
