Hi all, I'm getting white smoke on startup of my 54 2.2 CDTI.

I've checked the oil, no milky deposits that I can see... And it doesn't appear to be losing coolant.

It used to happen only after a long rest (overnight) but now pretty much something happens each time it starts.

Here's a video of what it looks like, look familiar to anyone?

might be glow plug(s) not working properly, or low compression in one cylinder (worn valve or worn piston ring), or an issue with an injector or the fuel itself.

how many miles has the car done ?

when was the last time the air filter and fuel filter were changed ?

Hey Brian,

Bought a few years ago, started with ~180k miles, now has about ~190k.

Fuel filter replaced 6 months ago, air filter last year.

It is due a service (like, right now)... in fact it's a touch neglected on that front. Someone mentioned head gasket/cracking that was a cause for concern, but it's only on start-up so a little unsure.

If that's a hint of blue I'm seeing ?....I'm automatically suspecting the valve seals.

^ maybe what he said, if it's true smoke (not water vapour) then it's not head gasket, and anyway you say it's not losing water

For a car that does 2500 miles a year and has already covered 190k, I'd just carry on plodding round in it for a couple of years till it dies, then sling it.
It'll probably last forever, no point pouring loads of money into it if you don't do the miles.

My honda is from 2004 got almost 120k,I own it for 3 years, after year it's start give a smoke when starting engine , the worst smoke was when I haven't use it for a week. Fahad remapped it, it still give a smoke, it's driving great, I stopped worry about it. Just drive it.

My 2004 iCTDI has the same symptom: A white puff of smoke on start-up. Sometimes i will get this even when the engine is warm and i make a stop to pick up groceries and then i start the car again or when the engine is cold. The period that the car stays unused doesn`t seem to have any effect. I have an appointment with a diesel specialist next week so i will report back. His early guesses where: Injectors-could be that one or more leaks fuel into the cylinder, turbine seals, or highly unlikely head gasket. Engine has now ~117.000miles.

So picking up the car tomorrow after an entire week. They couldn't find anything. They did a leak down test, checked various seals etc and what is worth mentioning is that they checked out even the glow plugs but they were not at fault either. I am using genuine Honda oil and have done 3 changes since buying the car 3 years ago.

Guys maybe consider cleaning the intake, intake ports, pipe work etc. You will need to dismantle the components for this but imo it makes a difference. If anything your intake will be clean.

There is a really good thread on here and I even did it to my Accord, honestly I felt a difference on general running and noise

When the problem started for me a few years back I had changed the air filter and it seems to make a difference, if only for a short while... I was never sure if it was a coincidence or not.

But I've not gone as far as checking the intake in more detail, so might do that.

@IronMan is this the thread you're referring to? Seems like all of the images are blocked out.

I also have started getting the white smoke on a cold start, its the only time it does it, first start of the day, on 174k miles now, no other problems with regards to driving it, but I think its coming from intake manifold, lots of dirt in there and i believe cleaning it will stop the smoke as mentioned above.

This is completely normal, isn't it?
No do you mean clear or White smoke ?

I meant the white smoke on a cold start, as it's almost certainly condensing water vapour from the combustion process. So completely normal.
