Hi all
I've had my 3L coupe for about a month now and loved it to bits......Untill tonight i went shopping, drove the car 100yards to fill up,put £25 of super unleaded in,payed, jumpin in turned the key it fired but then the rev's dropped away and it cut out ( no i didnt put diesil in..... ) It took about 5 or 6 trys then i fired up as normal so i pulled back into the car park to see if i had a lead or multi plug lose. Every thing seemed fine it just didnt seem to want to start as normal. I'm thinking it might be the TPS or idle valve so tomorrow after work it'll go into the workshop and i'll blow some carb/intake clear into the butterfly as i would if this was on some of the other cars i've had. Am I on the right track with this? I just dont know these engines you see and it that dont work it'll be a trip to honda.....Oh joy
If anyone has any ideas at all at what this might be because after tomorrow i'll be stumped.

Thanx Matt

I had a good look at it this afternoon and the trouble is with the fuel pump. Every so often it doesn't prime when you turn the key. I just need to work out if its the pump, alarm or other fault with it.

I would agree with the relay, a common fault on Hondas of a certain age.

If you've got a soldering iron, it shouldn't be difficult to fix. Though I must say I have no idea where it is on your car, normally its above the pedals in the drivers footwell.

Since i took the plug off and refitted it its been fine . But I will pick relay up to be on the safe side.

Nice one matt keep us updated about this.

Yep. Main relay located under the dash. Depending on your hearing , you can usually hear the fuel pump prime just before starting the car. This known issue is for hot starting. Just like you describe. Start the car cold, no worries. Drive to the petrol station turn it off. Fill her up. Pay. Have difficulty starting.

Its caused by the solder in the joints in the main relay. When cold the joints are fine, but when hot they aren't. If you are a bit handy with soldering iron or know someone who is, you can remove the relay and resolder all the joints. Issue fixed.

My eldest brother did this for my cousin back in the day on his 4th Gen Prelude. No further problems with hot starting. I've also had it happen on a couple of 4th Gen preludes. Frustrating when it happens, but a pretty straight forward fix.

In the Prelude the main relay was burried under the dash not far from the steering column, probably the same place on the accord? Hope you get it sorted!

Hello All,

Sorry for thread resurrection.

My Coupe V6 suffers from this hot start issue on occasions. Does anyone happen to know the part number and/or cost of the main relay for the Yank Tank V6 Coupe please? Mine is a 1999 T-reg.

Matt1600s - don't know if you still have your Coupe, but is it tricky to get to the relay? Did you literally unplug it and push it back in (i.e. wiggle it about a bit!) to resolve yours? Has it been OK since.

Sure you all want to help me keep this beasty running perfectly!

I still love it! It makes me smile every time I boat about in it.

Thanks
from Jase

My car has had this issue once or twice in 18 months ownership. Only when hot starting.

Hello chap's I'm a ex Honda tech also the new owner of Matt’s V6, Well I have another V6 as well ;) I can report that I actually fixed this issue on the car with a new relay. I’ve sorted loads of stuff on the V6 electrical issues, major servicing, cambelt ect ect on these lovely V6's :)
However I don't visit here often  as I'm on another forum so if you need any help with V6 don't hesitate to post up here and Private message me to let me know you have a question posted if you like…

Regards

Hughezee

no need to buy a new one and pay lots of money. take it out. and if you have soldering iron its 10 minutes job to fix it

Fare comment  so please do illustrate your quick fix  I didn't think it was really worth the effort as it was badly corroded inside and considering the age of the car. So I just replaced the unit  now I can forget about it for another 10 years

Here is the fix :) with pictures and etc. You will not drive that car for 10 more years. And relay cost ~ 50 I believe(don't know actually) so its not worth of buying a new one. But if you have a spare money and have no place to sped them then sure. buy a new one then

I am aware of the fix but my point is no amount of soldering would fix oxidized or burnt contacts or fatigued spring which operate it  Anyway I'm not debating this on here.. Also I think it's my choice how long I wish to keep the car considering I've personally re-built the auto transmission “simples”

All the best Hughezee

If it was more than bad soldering contacts, then sure, it worth changing into new one.

OK - I don't have a soldering iron (or any skills even if i had one).

Can anyone confirm this is the right part number for a '99 V6 coupe? Would like to be confident I know what I am asking for at Honda or even eBay!

98-02 Honda Accord 39400-S84-A01 or 39400-S84-003 RZ-0159* / RZ-0158**

* RZ-0159 is VRM-0022 (e.g., Siemens VRM-0022)

Why are there two options!!

Thanks all

39400-s84-a01 is an old honda part number whic is replaced bu 39400-s84-003. if that is your question about these to options :)

Also I found that part number should be 39400-S82-A01... I found that s84-a01 is for USA cars... not sure for 100%.

Thanks Linas - you certainly know your stuff.

OK - Lee from HH has supplied me with a new relay (I will leave +ve feedback in the HH section once the blasted new relay is in, as he was uber helpful).

It needs to go in ASAP because the car wouldnt hot start again tonight.

So has anyone got practical experience getting the old one out please?!! I have the 3.0 coupe remember. Just spent about 45 mins trying to shift the old one but to no avail. It's in a nightmare location!!!!! I can get to it but cant free it from the little clip which (i think) is preventing it from sliding off the metal flange. What's the trick to pushing the little clip/lug in so you can then slide it up?

Or should I push a big flat headed screwdriver in there and try to twist it off? Don't want to damage the plug (don't really care about the old relay but wouldn't want to wreck it just in case.

Or should I remove the whole metal bracket ***embly with the 10mm socket (want to avoid this if possibe).

Yours irritated and aching...but not wanting to pay a mechanic just yet..

Thanks guys

Good for you dude. Not wanting to pay someone else and up for giving it a go yourself. I can't really help with your problem mate (sorry) but if i were you i'd remove anything that was in the way and would make my life easier if it weren't there.

Interesting comment - can I ask what you do for a living?

Thank - God what a g1t it is! Just can't budge it! I have decided to relocate the new one as I have at least managed to disconnect the plug from the old relay! Plugged the new one in and just gone for a quick burn for 15mins, stopped for a couple of mins to simulate filling up / getting a newspaper and it started perfectly when hot. Early doors I know, but hope issue resolved. Will cable tie new relay to the loom somewhere ACCESSIBLE, which seems to be the recommendation anyway.

Hope I can enjoy/trust my otherwise lovely old V6 beasty again now, complete with it's new OEM floor mats courtesy of the very useful Lee from HH.
