Hi there people,

I am Kay, from SW London. We own a Honda Accord Type S 2.4. We've had it for about 4 years without any problems. This is the 1st problem, car har covered 94,000 miles.

Basically all of a sudden in traffic I had problems selecting gears, plus the clutch felt 'softer'. I managed to drive home in 3rd as thats the only gear I managed to select easily. The next day I couldnt select any gear & when I did try it made the griding noise. If i turn the car off I can select gears perfectly fine apart from 5th. If i turn the car off and put it in gear with the clutch down & then start it, the car jumps forward abit?

There hast been any clutch slip at all. I inspected for any leaks in the bay but nothing. The clutch fluid looks full but very black?. I looked behind the clutch pedal & I can see a little residue of oil, looks like its coming from the master cylinder?

So far i personally think the master cylinder is shot, but not 100%. I came accross this site & thought I'd ask for help/opinions

Many thanks

PS: Completely stock car

It's either the master or slave cylinder that's the problem - one of them needs refurbishment or replacement. But maybe bleeding the system through with new fluid might put the problem right (but this could be temporary).

Hi,

Thanks for the reply

We bled the system out yesterday. We bled the clutch out but it did not make any difference. Basically the clutch feels more softer, also while we were bleeding I noticed the fluid was getting lower in the res. The fluid also looks very bad. Now I am waiting for a new CMC, I take its not hard to fit, looks pretty simple?

Lastly I dont know if this makes any difference but the rubber on the CSC looks a bit worn & looks less pressed compared to my friends TSX CSC?? No leaks on it etc, rubber has a slight rip

You should have topped up the master cylinder while bleeding, and keep going until you've bled out all the dirty fluid through the slave.

I've not changed an Accord clutch cylinder, so hopefully someone with that experience can help.

It might also be your clutch pressure plate that's knackered. My wife's FRV clutch failed recently and it did something similar a few times, and then seemed ok. The next time we drove it (returning home from the airport after a long holiday, fully loaded with luggage etc) it just gave up altogether.

If the pressure plate has seized inside the bell housing, it can cause the problem of jamming the gears and it's quite possible there was nothing wrong with your clutch fluid at all.

I've change a clutch master cylinder. Not too bad except the two bolts (or nuts, can't remember which) that hold the cylinder in place that you access from the footwell can be a pain - mine were very tight and I couldn't get a socket or spanner on them and get good leverage. I ended up having to cycle to Halfords and buying a deep socket. I might have been unlucky with the size/shape of my tools but before doing anything else make sure you can loosen these bolts. I found getting a plastic tube to stay on the bleed nipple a pain, but sounds like you've been there. Other than spilling clutch fluid down the back of the engine (that stuff took a long time to clean off) it all went swimmingly, even if it took about six hours instead of two!

Hi people

A little update. Basically it was the metal clutch pedal mechanism behind the clutch pedal that had cracked. This caused serious play in the complete pedal. I did have the CMC & SMC bought incase I needed it, just to be on the safe side I did replace the CMC but returned the SMC.

Thanks for everyones help
