Hi All

Wondered if anyone could ***ist with a sat nav system fault? The problem doesn't always manifest itself which is annoying.

Sometimes upon starting the car, the screen will display the Honda Navigation earth and just hang there without H&S text and OK button. Somedays the screen won't show anything at all. Then somedays it works absolutely fine :)

I have scanned this forum (and others) to try and find a solution but first I need to establish where exactly the fault is. I have tried disconnecting the car battery in an effort to reset it somehow - no joy. I have cleaned the DVD disc itself but stopped short of stripping down the whole DVD unit.

Is this problem linked to DVD reader or is it somewhere within the PC side of the unit itself?

Any thoughts guys? Would appreciate any help...

It's likely to be the DVD unit, they can be repaired for about £200 (plenty of posts on here about it). Mine doesn't boot properly, like yours, but my workaround is to start the car immediately without pausing with the ignition on, works fine then.

Are you using a genuine disk ?

I've stripped my DVD unit down twice and cleaned the lens myself. Both times the unit has come bhack to life no problem. Overtime it just gets dirty. I wouldn't be suprised if thats all that is done when you send it off. The problem I had was a message saying 'DVD Read error' or something like that which resulted in the system shutting down.
It is a fiddly task to strip it down and can be a pain to put back togeother but is achiveable.

However if you don't have a genuine DVD disk then this can cause problems too.

Type R, Brett and Carter

Thanks so much for your input.

My disc is genuine, it is an early version but in good condition. I'm not getting any read error messages which is why I started to think it was something to do with the ecu of the unit. From looking at other forums, someone suggested getting an auto technician to check sat nav unit was getting correct voltage (relay or ignition switch issue???) Interesting to read Carter starting the car without pausing with ignition works. Could it therefore be a dodgy relay. Would anyone know where this relay is?

Now I know how to strip the DVD unit, I'll do the cheapest option as Type R suggests...wish me luck!!

Your time and thoughts are very much appreciated :)

Warmest Regards

I had that. Quick start was good. If I staggered turning the key turn, no dice until one day when the whole thing just stopped working.

I went the route of sending it away and it came back working while I was about £150 lighter. All things considered, could have been worst. I'd still remove it yourself and get stuck in with some cotton buds and a can of compressed air before you go shelling out for a refurbishment.

Stevearcade, I got stuck in as you put it and now it's U/S :(

I managed to remove the mechanism that covers the lens, cleaned it, put it back in reverse order but now the disc doesn't spin at all. It powers up fine and DVD will slide in as normal but nothing else happens. I get the disc read error now due to disc not spinning :(

Methinks Alpine will be getting a call tomorrow LOL

Thanks for your input.
