Hi everyone. New here, I've got a MK8 2.2 i-dtec tourer, but I'm here trying to help out a friend. He's just bought an exceptional example of a MK7 2003 2.4 auto tourer and he's chuffed to bits with it. The only issue is with the satnav.
He has the nav system fitted and also has the subwoofer in the boot so I ***ume he's got the premium system? Anyway, his DVD drive won't read his nav disc because its severely scratched, pictured is the front of the disc for your reference.
My question is, does he need to buy the same disc again or is there a newer version available? If so, what version number would work? Many thanks I advance for your help.

It's probably not the disk that's the problem. The laser lens in the DVD gets dirty and it's a common problem. The DVD can be removed, taken apart and the lens cleaned which will keep it going for a while.

Thanks for the reply.

I've already taken the DVD player apart and cleaned the lens, which to be fair was not dirty in the slightest. It picks up other discs when trying them, but will not pick up the nav disc, I've tried the nav disc in other drives I have just to see if any of them will acknowledge its presence and none do, so it's got to be the disc at fault due to the unbelievable amount of scratches. It honestly looks like it's been rolling around in the glove box, not in a case, for its entire life!

You can buy copies from eBay but apparently they cause problems as they are not formatted in quite the same way as the original but might be better than noting at the moment

DO NOT Buy a copy. The DVD will work fine for a month or two then the laser will burn out and the whole unit will need replacing. I've been there :(

He needs to check ebay etc for a genuine disk that matches his car. There later version is 2.04 I think,t but it makes very little difference as they are still over 12 yrs old.

BEWARE lots of places say they sell the genuine disk but it is not the Gold Honda OEM one.

You can download yourself the sat nav map if you know where to look ;), burn in with lowest possible speed in a quality double layer disc and use it. (3rd party sites does the same but they tend to use cheapest printable discs and burn in speed is fast then they print on face ''genuine'' looks to look like genuine, but they tend to bug.)
No one in ebay or other 3rd party sites will sell you original especially if the disc is new without scratches, only honda itself(for few hundred.. for old - out of date map.)

Im driving with the newest version for facelift 7th gen available(3.C0 2018) 4 years now and no problems at all. Before ive downloaded and burned 3.B0 used for a year without problems....
And a side note if you place in the never map update and update, sw version on sat nav will also update, so it only works with that year map disc you cannot interchange map versions.
and if you place an older disc it will tell that it isnt compatible, i have original disc from 2007 that came with the car, and tried to see if it works, but it sayes it isnt compatible and consult my dealer, but at least in 7th gen in the sat nav menu you have a 're download' button pressing it, it re reads from the inserted disc and installs the older sw&map and then it will be able to use that disc.

Time to time my sat nav tells me that 'error reading disc, please consult your dealer' but then i eject and insert it it 'plays' like it should. I think it is the navi unit age that is starting to show(as it is 15yo) and not because of my homemade burnt map disc.

p.s. pre facelift and facelift versions have different navi unit software, so if you have pre facelift you need to search for that navi type as the facelift have different version and it wont work on pre's.
Pre facelift have 'v2.xx' and correct if im wrong latest map version is 2012?
facelift have 'v3.xx' and latest is year 2018

There is some information in this post regarding how the Nav system checks whether is disk is "genuine", and how that can be fixed, should you want to make a working back up copy of your original.

Any hints on where to find the latest v2? ;)

V2 7th Gen Pre facelift "self burned" disks will last 3-4 months tops ad the DVD lens is not powerful enough and will eventually burn out.

From above

That's good, shame there is not an upgrade path for the pre facelift. The DVD player lens seems to be made of cheese. After burning out my first one it took 4 attempts buying replacements on eBay, the first three also with ruined lasers.

I am having same problem sometimes works, sometimes not I have ver. 2.11 disc which is the latest for mk 7 - if any company out there can repair these dvd laser units for a reasonable cost they will make a lot of money ! I use a tom tom anyway but would love to keep my original working as it should - I have asked a couple of UK companies for repair cost - but they are scandalous prices - and don`t even consider asking Honda - you could buy another used car for the cost of what they are asking !!!! The Power of Dreams my a*se - I love my car but the dealership is rubbish !!!! Shame as their cars are great ! Just my opinion !

Alpine Used to repair the units but stopped over 5 years ago. Agree a repairer could make some decent cash.

UPDATE - you can try and "re-load" your disc. worked for me ! Mine is Version 2.11 the latest that Honda made (although still out of date !!!! )
to enter "diagnostic mode" push and hold Menu and Zoom Down buttons for a few seconds, takes you to system link with "fanfare" sound. press Next "car status page. Next " yaw rate page" Next "diagnosis menu page" Select "unit check" Select "force download"
This will force your unit to read the disc, that`s of course if the disc is readable ! This also works to go back to an earlier map version if you can not get the same or later version disc !
I am still trying to find somewhere to buy a new laser unit, from what I have read it is not hard to install it in a non working unit - not having much luck finding one yet though - anyone know of a supplier ? it will probably be from China but if I can find one I will give it a go !!!!!!!!!!!!! Fingers crossed.

Just a quick thought -------- mine is sometimes working sometimes not ! ------- I would have thought if the laser was burned out - it would not work at all !!!!!!!!! or is my thinking wrong ? Maybe it is NOT the laser but another electronic component within the unit - capacitor/transistor/diode or whatever ?? The plot thickens !

Update !!!
my Version 2.11 bought for £25 must be a copy ! No big deal, but recently stopped working SO today out of curiosity I inserted my old original Version 2.1 in the DVD unit and carried out my earlier post on how to re-use the old disc or force download and it is now working again !!!! For how long I know not - but it downloaded perfectly ( yes it is way out of date but it is working) If it starts playing up again I will re-post the info, so if you don`t see a further update - it will still be working, if this is the same for later versions I don`t know - but if yours is not working, it MIGHT be worth a try - I can only say it worked on my Version 2.1 !
Hope this helps others !

Hi all, hope this helps someone else - just an update. My sat nav occasionally comes up with "disc read error" or similar BUT usually when the inside of the car is misted up and cold - I presume the laser eye has condensation on it ! when the car is warmed up, it works again, I am still using the old Ver 2.01 original disc.
If anyone has an original later Ver 2.xx they are not using I will happily buy it from them e.g. Ver 2.04 2.05 2.06 etc., it will still be WAY out of date but I will give it a go.
I recently saw on eBay a recondition service for the nav unit I think it was around £139 for the fix - you have to send it to them and they send it back - how good they are I don`t know and what they do I don`t know, I would hope they replace the laser unit ?
Anyway I hope this helps somebody. Good luck
