What's new

Car runs well without air filter, but with new air filter it won't rev over 3k. 2.2 cdti tourer.

2005 Accord Tourer
My 2005 Tourer 2.2 developed a fault while driving, lost all power as if the turbo had failed, and the glow plug light kept intermittently flashing.
ODB said P1237 lack of boost?Anyway my decent local garge plugged in their fancy ODB and said it seems like air mass flow sensor, which was a cheap and easy replacement, and a new air filter.
The car now drives better, but seems to hit a wall at 3k, but with the air filter out it will rev all the way to the redline. It is not giving any fault codes now. Any ideas?

Note - it behaves the same with the old air filter too, stuck at 3k ish..

Check your airbox connection back to the turbo, one of the pipes will be kinked or not fitted correctly.

nope, tried all that, pipes are fine, no leaks, splits or fit issues.
We have replaced air mass flow sensor, map sensor, cleaned egr, checked intercooler, turbo. its wierd.
Take out air filter it runs like a dream. Anything else other than chucking it off a cliff?

How cheap? Not all sensors are equal and to be honest I wouldn't like to pay Honda prices, but really cheap ones may not be up to the job.
And to be honest, it could be a lot of other things like hose leaks, sensors, electrical wiring etc.

I have a similar problem with my 05 sprinter van, been trying to solve it for over a year, only revs to 3200rpm and turbo doesn't kick in so acceleration is really slow.
Replaced lots of parts and sensors but didn't solve the problem. Been reading all the forums for months, no real answer, no instant fix, it gets really annoying.
How could it be so complicated?

Could you get hold of an aftermarket filter (perhaps off another car), something like S+B / K+N that passes more air through ?

bobfish45 had exactly the same issue and it was an incorrectly fitted airbox pipe as I’ve suggested. Have a chat with him.
