8th i-DTEC Tourer EX
09 Plate Mk VIII 2.2 Diesel i-DTEC Tourer EX - EGR and DPF present.

Owned since February 2022 and no remap by me.

On two consecutive occasions engine stopped within five minutes of starting journey then restarted immediately with key.

Made only two changes after second occurrence and it has not reoccurred. Changes were that I immediately filled up from around half tank of diesel (planned to anyway for drive home) and topped up coolant, the latter after reading a post on here about a similar experience. Was worried it was a gunged up fuel filter.

The next day I drove back without issue to North Wales across country in build up to Storm Darragh, but before I started moving, this time I ran car on drive for 10 minutes to see if it would just stop. No.

No further issues.

As it’s a bit of a strange one, thought I’d recount it for the possible benefit of the Forum and other drivers as I came here to look for answers and as usual there were some similar if not exact experiences.

On both occasions car engine stopped within five minutes of starting from cold. I mean I was moving along, then pressing the accelerator and it was dead and I watched the dials return to zero as I came to a stop. All running lights were on (no fade) and no dash warning lights. Car restarted straight away using ignition, with one minor difference second time (see below). On both occasions happened at fairly low speed in low gears (possibly after changing gear) when going slightly uphill.

First instance, parked car at dwelling on stone pebble driveway in Somerset countryside from Friday evening 2000hrs and not restarted until Monday evening around same time, so 72 hours stationary. On leaving, when it occurred, I was mystified as I watched revs fall away. When stationary and worried, I turned off radio (as you do) and possibly lights, then ignition and it restarted straight away driving an hour down to Devon mostly on M5, worried it would happen again. I was worried because on arrival at this location my brother had been hoovering out a vehicle following rat invasion in pursuit of dog food left it in it while he was away for a few weeks. While in residence they had taken a liking to some wiring and wiring covers, as they do, and I was concerned they’d moved on to another car as coincidentally Mum’s car broke down that same day afternoon after leaving there as well! (A greater distance than me but before M5, Skoda, gearbox, probably those crap bearings on the 14 era plate 1.2 petrol, Yetis).

Then I parked on gravel drive for 44 hours and went out around 1715 and it did it again (no running light fade or dash fault lights). This time initially I turned ignition key a few times without success but then turned it off and slipped key half way out before trying again, engine started immediately, no further incidents. Might have done that with the key on the first occurrence too but don’t recall, wasn’t being methodical then and remembering.

The original diesel full tank was from a Texaco I don’t usually go to but fairly local North Wales bought four days before first parking and no issues on way down.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like an electrical issue to me. If it was fuel or air intake related there would probably be some sort of a symptom like a miss or hesitation, and also likely a diagnostic trouble code. A sudden loss of engine communication and input controls such as throttle would suggest a momentary break in ecu signals, but I’m just going from your stated description.

Thanks, that was why I was rat worried as my brother has now scrapped the car they invaded. Hasn't recurred so can only wait and see.
