Two different idling sounds

I have noticed when sitting at traffic lights in my new (to me) Accord that the car has two different idling noises.

You can sit there for 30 seconds with a nice soft purring noise. Then the note will change into something more growly, but the rpm (800) will not change at all.

Normal, abnormal, known issue on the way?

its your air con kicking in and out

I would say its the fan. it will kick in when the engine reaches a certain temperature and cool it down. Mainly when stationary as there is no cool air being forced in to the engine.
If it was the aircon the idling speed would rise slightly. Either way, Nothing to worry about.

Yeah, it's your fan. There are two huge fans behind the grill. One only comes on when needed. Nothing to worry about. Turn the engine on and pop the bonnet Watch for 30 seconds or so, you'll see it for yourself.

Aircon, in this weather?!

You can feel it in the pedal as well if you have music on a bit!

On our diesels I've believe it's due to the EGR valve opening after engine has been idling for 30s.

If you have your climate set to auto I would go with what Brett said. The aircon seems to kick in and out all the time (hot or cold) to try and keep the car within the temp set.

As Nick said just to rule out the climate control what i said make sure its off and not on Auto.
If it is then it will be your fan for sure.
